Which XC helmet (racing content)?

I’ve damaged a Met Kaos UL after falling, but am not over the moon with the Gel forehead pad which keeps coming unstuck.

I have a Met shaped head.

I’m looking closely at a Giro Fathom in white. Its expensive, so what else should I consider for trails & XC racing?

I’m using the kask mojito, I think it was ~£100 but that was at a lbs so you should be able to get it cheaper!

It fits, doesn’t annoy me. Not sure what else to say about it.

+1 for Mojito – only issue is incompatability with many glasses. Also have a Giro which is better for that.

Hmm. I could use it for road as well then… I have a K52 evo for that and I like the retention system

I use a Catlike Mixino’s for both CX’er hacks and Road. In the main because of the large vents. Cap underneath for cooler days.

Is most excellent. I’ve 2, mine were £125 ea but have seen some great deals for £89 odd.

Many using the new aero road helmets for XC? Seen a few racing XC in Spesh Evade helmets on the telly. I guess it depends on how quick your going as to how significant a benefit this would be. Also you risk looking like a knob.

FWIW I’ve been using a Giro Air Attack on the road for a while now but went back to a normal vented helmet for last nights ride. Definitely noticed a difference in pace.

use my Giro Synthe for XC riding, very light, very very comfortable

Worth remembering FH, it also has a huge dent in it where I crashed, so the gel pad was an annoyance rather than a replacement issue,

If you can see your way past the gel pad (I like mine better than foamy stuff), I’ve been very impressed with the MEt Veleno. very comfortable and airy even in this hot and humid weather

does your head fist Spesh lids?

I’ve used Propero’s and S-Works (now S3) for years now and can’t fault them, and replacement pad kits readily available.

I use a Lazer genesis, its lovely, but having tried on a giro synthe, I’m saving up, soooooo comfy

Plus you then buy into Specialized excellent crash replacement.

I use Giro helmets and had a few years defecting to the Kaos UL and a Veleno. The Met helmets gave me a blinding headache while the Giros are completely comfortable. I would try a Giro before buying.

I don’t think there’s a SBC replacement programme in UK BTW.

I did, when I was using a Giro Athlon for both. Peak gets in the way on the road bike but I don’t want to look like I’m slightly out of touch with the latest fashions on the mountain bike (though usually I just have two helmets- a proper lightweight racey one for the road with no peak and a deeper coverage on for the mountain bike).

Never found the peak an issue on the road.

Never hated a road helmet on the mtb, despite losing 1cm or so of rear polystyrene

I also find riding with a muddy helmet on the road bike utterly embarrassing.

For racing I just use my road helmet – a specialised prevail, next time spec do a amnesty I plan to pick up an S3 as well as I’d prefer not to have to clean the road helmet so much.

I use a poc trabec for bigger days as I actually managed to knock myself out once by hitting the back of my head behind the ear which road helmets have less protection.

Would have agreed on peak wearing on road not being an issue until I started riding more road miles in training (oh the shame)
With my Spesh S3 I find the peak obscures the more distant part of the road and I took it off half way through the ride as I thought it was positively dangerous. But then I get pretty scared riding on North Devon roads at the best of times to be honest.
For what its worth none of my friends who are “proper” XC racers ever wear peaks on their helmets. Ever.

Peaks are a bit silly really, just fashion for trail riders. Much like baggies.

If you have a Met shaped head, then Giro probably won’t be any good. I’ve done lots and lots (and even more lots!) of research and trying on recently, and found that Spesh are generally a good fit (but they don’t adjust at the point the three bits of strap meet under your ears, so the rear bit of strap caught on my ears). I’ve ended up with a Lazer Grace, which has a boy’s equivalent in the Helium. Super fit, if a tad on the pricey side.

Hmm. I’m sold on the looks, weight and style of the S3, it is a road helmet. Should this make me nervous during normal (non race) environments to the point I really need to get a deeper coverage lid for that – e.g. Two helmets? Which of course I don’t want to do…

I would’t, there’s **** all in it, 1/2″ when I’ve looked, and it’s need to be a sharp thing you hit to make a difference.

Ok peaks attached to helmets look stupid on the road. Peaked caps under helmets look pro. At least the hat actually serves a purpose.

Well, a white S3 has been ordered.

Well, my S3 arrived.

It looks so good in white it makes even me look handsome as an added benefit. I’m converted to Spec. definitely.

Liking the Mindset adjust too, similar to Kask from a fit perspective.
