I’m doing a nice roadie loop from Inners to Annan and back complete with a visit to see the monks and a ride up the Devils Beef Tub. Should be a giggle.

    Where are you riding?

Up at 6am, off to Keswick. Borrowdale, Watendlath, Thirlmere, Old Coach Road, Threlkeld, Blencathra Centre, Keswick.

I wanted to ride Old Coach Road with my partner after enjoying the scenery on the C2C, so he’s built this loop to include it. If anyone has any tips on spotting the bridleway that leaves OCR on the left and heads down to a farm and a tree plantation, please let us know. Also best place to cross A66 and get the Threlkeld.

Phew. Tea and cake at Lakeland Pedlar after all that, I think.

    Looking forward to it.

Cooroo.. may see you, back O Skidda, white water dash through skidda house to Latrigg and Keswick…. Lakeland Peddlar for tea and medals.

Best place across A66, St John in the Vale / A66 junction i reckon.

I’ll be doing our 25 miles loop south of Warwick with onewheelgood.
8am start so we can get back so I can keep the peace and do family stuff.

I can never remember where we go but can picture all the interesting bits.

Sturatie_C – where is the Glack? The rest of that route is great.

CooRoo – Is this the bridleway you’re trying to pick:

As you’re coming through St John’s in the Vale, watch out for an old yellow digger in the trees on your right – the bridleway is just on the right after that (with a barrier / gate and a no access sign).

We might see you on the coach road..that’ll be our route home from Ullswater 🙂

    Hmmm, not sure that worked.

It’s a road junction 1.5kms west of Cademuir Hill

I’ve got you and I concur – that is indeed a great descent.

No, Tiger, it’s a lot further along the Old Coach Road. Let me try…

(damn no preview, hope this works)

Hmm, barely – it’s the one just peeping on the left, but so little context it’s not worth it. Tried linking from Streetmap but it only gave me a tiny bit.

I think I see where you mean:

That’s a hard one to spot – I don’t recall there being any kind of cairn at all. However, I’m pretty sure there’s a massive boulder on opposite side of the coach road that might help you pick it up.

I’d be interested to hear how the bridleway rides – I’ve avoided it in the past as I assumed it’d be a bog.

Cooroo – don’t do it. Worst Bridleway ever (and I’ve been on a few contenders for that title). There’s signs saying “deep bogs not recommended for horses”. I did it about 5 years ago (going S to N), wondering how bad it could be. It’s bad. Very bad. A long, nasty carry through head-high peat hags. You’re far better going on to High Row, down the road and then picking up whichever C2C route appeals most to get to Threkeld. Now please promise me you won’t do it, or I’ll worry all of tomorrow!

We’re going Edinburgh – Innerleithen and back on the road bikes. Should be a nice day for it.

Thanks ParkedTiger and StuN for the heads up on the bridleway. On consideration we may well avoid and go round the road!

OK, why did no one warn us about Watendlath-Thirlmere?? Exhausting carry up at the beginning, unridably (for me) boggy in the middle and absolute bastard of a carry down at the end. How it can be designated a bridleway is beyond me – you’d never get a horse up that rocky stream thing at the Thirlmere end. Or over the style.

Or did we miss a turning?

After that experience we absolutely ignored the bridleway off the Old Coach Road – which is actually signposted! And we really enjoyed the tarmac road up Thirlmere after not riding for 3 or 4 miles.

Beautiful weather, amazing scenery made up for disappointing b-way!
