Wheelwright's coast to coast (St Bees to Robin hood bay)

I am struggling to find good info on this route and have kinda got it in my head that I want to do it. I have a few questions for experienced people. How many miles is it? I know it is hilly as hell so the miles covered means almost nothing. How many hours riding did it take people to do it? Is it a stupid idea to try to do it all on one go with no sleep?

I am thinking it is silly to try to do it as one massive ride as the point of it is to tour and enjoy the scenery etc but just wondering how possible it is.

I am having the same thoughts. Last year someone did do this and tehre’s a blog on the net if you google it.

IIRC the Dales MTB centre do an organised 3 day trip, 10hrs hard riding each day, with endurance racer legend Rich Rothwell as the guide.

One hit will be one hell of ride.

Have done it in 3 and a half days riding, carrying all our own stuff but staying at YHA and B&Bs. Were 3 long days though probably 10/12 hour days. The weather will make a big difference too. We rode in the mainly dry but after a week of very heavy rain so the Dales were soft. There are probably 4 or 5 OS maps so just start by marking them up and study the route to hell. We overnighted at Staveley (4km off the route), Grinton (1km off) and Crosedale

great ride, did it in 3 1/2 days on my own carrying bivvi gear. the books a real help, the maps just about good enough to not need maps, but the maps in the guide pack here aren’t as good so probably worth getting additional OS maps for with those (i’ve seen them in waterstone’s in newcastle).

compass and computer are worthwhile taking as the route directions are all in N/S/E/W etc bearings with distances to next junction. a mixture of wild/legal camping/bothy’ing across the whole route is possible too. lakes is the hardest in terms of technicality/steepness, rest is bit easier going but still challenging on the legs 🙂
