What's with people talking into their phone held horizontally?

This features heavily in the apprentice (so that the conversation is shared with the film crew) but why on the 8.12 to Horsham? Similarly a lot of yoof appear to be using their phones Captain Kirk style?

Because they don’t uderstand that other people don’t want to hear their innane ramblings.
They’ll be the same idiots that stand in the way in doorways, on stairs, on narrow pavements whilst gawping at their phone screen.

Eloquently put. And it does seem to be a yoof fing. Something I don’t understand. I also don’t understand how the yoof seem to be able to wear jeans with the waistband below their arse without falling down. No one has been able.to explain to me how this is accomplished.

I work with someone who didn’t realise there was a microphone on her headphones, she thought you had to hold the phone up in order to be heard. Very intelligent girl, no idea.

Anyone using their phone on speaker phone in public should be shot, immediately.

I often see people with their headphones/earpiece plugged into the phone, holding the phone in one hand and holding the microphone on the headphones to their mouth with the other. I always feel like saying “here you go mate, let me show you something…”

It baffles me too. Hands free? We’ll see about that, nobody tells me what to do!

Then again, I am over 30.

People are idiots and if there’s one thing that allows them to demostrate how much of an idiot they are in public, it’s the bloody mobile phone.

And at the other end of the spectrum, we have those who turn thier key pad tones up, so on the train the whole carridge gets to listen to click click click click whilst they painfully type out a text message essay.

This place is becoming / has become the online equivalent of the Fast Show Old Gits.

I feel right at home.

It’s ok, they’ll turn it back round to ‘portrait’ when they want to shoot a video.

Person one, sitting in an airport lounge, having one of those loud, self important business calls.
Everyone else, increasingly annoyed.

My theory,

This method is shown a lot on reality TV, for a reason – the TV people want the audience to hear both sides of the conversation so they stick it on speaker phone.

Yoofs copy what they see on TV, as they’ve always done, without too much thought. Older people would be embarrassed by sharing their conversation, but it’s been normalised by reality stars so yoofs see it as normal.

I use my phone on speaker UNLESS it’s in public.

Having to actually pick it up off my desk and hold it to my ear seems about as old fashioned as answering it “ahoy-hoy”.

Agreed that doing it in public unless actually a group all talking into the phone is bellendary.

I thought it was people using WhatsApp and leaving voice messages, guys in the gym seem to use it a lot. You sort of have a half duplex conversation at text message pace……

There are, very rare occasions, when I get a call while I’ve got the ‘phones in listening to music, and reading a book, so I’ll continue to hold the phone while I take the call, and it does allow me to switch to another screen during the conversation, if necessary.
I’ll also hold the mike/remote a bit closer to my mouth to avoid being drowned out by background noise if I’m outdoors, my hands free headset is, after all, only a few centimetres away from my mouth, plus it avoids added microphony due to the cable and remote rubbing against my clothing if I move.
Same if I’m using the hands free BT headset, I frequently have to use the keyboard during a call, so holding the phone is logical, allowing the use of the keyboard or searching the calendar during the call, or whatever.
Not while driving, of course!

Meanwhile, my parents wonder why holding the phone upside down doesn’t work very well.
