What tools and guide for service

I am thinking of having a go at servicing my bike, if you was to take your bike to a shop what would they do, also what tools would i require and where to buy, and are there any good websites for info on what i would need to do. as last time I had it done by local shop it cost a bomb

As for tools – a decent set of ball-end allen keys (about £20) is a must, the rest depends on what exactly you want to do.
