I am loving the fact that only one other person has mentioned Serenity. Such a great film, and so little exposure.

I was under the impression that serenity was a suprise smash hit by all accounts. Great film & very good series (firefly)

    Some good picks here
Though I love a great many films, 'The Wicker Man' (original edit, not directors cut) and 'Let The Right One In' stand above all others for me.

Some other obscure random great ones worth seeking out if not seen:

    Old Boy
    Funny Games (original, not re-make)
    Grizzly Man (documentary)
    Riding Giants (documentary)
    The Ring (original, not re-make)

I measure a film by how many times I can watch it without being bored, so Star Wars comes top

    But also…
So I Married an Axe Murderer
    The Great Escape

    and probably…
    Little Miss Sunshine

Varies, but Love, Honour & Obey always features. Fantastic film with a fantastic british cast. The 'Fix Bayonets' scene always cracks me up

Some good ones there, as above, can't narrow it down to one, but…

Funny: Young frankenstien/Blazing saddles/There's something about mary/Life of Brian. Have watched them all countless times but still laugh out loud

Weird/world films: Pans Labyrinth/Amelie/Belleville Rendesvous, All a good read 😉

anything by Kubrick (though eyes wide shut was a bit iffy) Recently discovered Garden state and thought it was excellent. And have a soft spot for Pixar films too, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles being my faves

Out of interest, The Shawshank Redemption comes up quite a bit when anyone has a favorite films thread,
    Can anyone explain WHY?
To me (a bit of a cinema snob BTW) I just dont see it.
It seems to be a formulaic, plodding, prison TV movie with Tim Robbins as a reassuringly white middle class lead ( just like the target audience)
Morgan Freeman in his typecast 'black buddy-to-the hero' role ( its automatically assumed no black guy would be smart enough to escape from prison, of course)
Everything about the film is just a series of easy cliches, right down to the happy ever after ending.
Its crap, or am I wrong?

(I'm with you West kipper, one of the most average films ever)

Forgotten on my list, should've had

Southern Comfort (probably my number 1)
    Deer Hunter
    Wise Blood

    Shawshank Redemption
    are just a few.

Shawshank Redemption (west kipper is fully entitled to his opinion its just different from mine !)
Ronin (Has it faults but hey ho)
Ferris Bueller's Day off ( "hey balla balla !")
    Local Hero ( just special)
    Grosse Pointe Blank (way cool)
Donnie Darko ( strange and wonderful)
Breakfast Club ( More John Hughes rip)
Saving Private Ryan ( greet like a wean at the ending every time)
Green Mile ( "like coffee, just not spelt the same" )
    Shindlers list ( shockingly good)
    Gregory's Girl ( "how may elephants ?")
Band of Brothers ( not a film but brilliant)
Original Italian Job ( new one is pathetic)
Life of Brian ( "you lucky lucky barstalward")
    Leon ( needs no comment)
Gladiator ( joaquin Pheonix is the real star)
Heat ( how to really shoot)
BlackHawk Down ( Ridley Scott you done good)
Forrest Gump ( admit it its good)

and finally, never ever, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Marvin is 7 foot tall, grey and grumpy, with a pain all down the diodes on his left side. That white kitchen swing bin thing is a Hollywood cop out. RIP Douglas.
