Paint.Net is pretty good, Gimp’s a lot more powerful but a bit of a nightmare to use.

The Gimp has a steep learning curve – but there’s lots of info on line and a couple of flickr groups dedicated to it.

really it depends on what you want to do – if you want to correct colour, crop and maybe put a black frame on, then you might be better spending a few quid on PS Elements. but picassa can do most of that.

If you need to edit photos for noise, sharpening, maybe exposure blending then you’ll want a CS3 clone – of which GIMP is the best supported free version, but it is not as good as CS3

paint.net is pretty good if you’re just after the basics.

Also try Adobe Photoshop Express – it is an online editor that works in your browser.

If you want basic but functional, I quite like picnik.com.

have a look at the cover discs on some of the computer mags too, they often come with free photo editing software, I got my copy of paint shop pro off a cover disc and it’s easy to use, plenty options etc.

I like Picasa for basic editing, and I use Adobe CS3 and all its gubbins for anything else I need to do. Although it is bloody hard to learn to use it properly.

Gimp is comprehensive, plenty of features.

LightBox does some nice stuff, and easy photo colour retouching etc…

i like google picasa for basic and quick editing of jpegs (as well as it’s indexing, upload facility, online storage etc etc etc…), and photoshop for more indepth stuff. I use lightroom to edit RAW images from the camera.

Picasa gets my vote to cover the essentials and is also a doddle to use and upload piccies to the web

I’ve an old version of Paintshop Pro you can have a copy of.
Is basic but does the job without the 10001 tools & add-on’s that they include these days but you’ll never use.

Some photoshopping jobs I’ve done… 🙂
