Wedding Rings

I'm getting married this year and haven't yet sorted out the rings, I need the help of the STW massive with the following…

I think it would a nice touch to design our own rings, has anyone here done this? If so are there any people you want to recommend and good for the job?

I also like the idea of going and getting the gold myself, I think I saw something about being able to do that in Wales somewhere sieving it out of a river or somesuch and then paying the landowner? Is this actually possible or is this a stupid idea??

Get your wife a nice one and yourself a cheap one. Mine is bent and scratched to he'll in 3 years. I take it off for biking and sailing so always mislaying it.

Find local jewellers, choose rings you both like, hand over credit card, end of story.

Its the act of what you are doing that matters, not how much or what it is or where it came from.

we had our wedding rings designed and made for us by a local jeweller in Cwmbran, very reasonable too, plus OH got whta she wanted so less grief as she designed it so had to like it lol.

I guess most good independant jewellers will be able to help you out.

Not heard of panning for gold in North Wales – maybe true – but what if you can't find any?

I agree with tragically 1969. I can't imagine that you can design a wedding ring that isn't already in existance unless it isn't going to look like a wedding ring and I can think of much more interesting things to do than panning for enough flakes of gold to make 2 rings. Then again I am an ex geologist so I've had my share of that sort of thing.

We went to Mappin and Webb, quite a nice selection, got well looked after and chose 2 rings in about 45 minutes. They make them for you after you've chosen from their display models.

My wife recently replaced her twenty quid wedding ring with a £1.25 mood ring. When that turned her finger green, she bought a second hand silver ring for £8. That was too big and kept falling off, so she got another one for about a fiver.

Seems that it would be more usual to get creative with the engagement ring, where there are 1000s of possibilities, rather than the wedding ring. JMO though, I like my wedding ring being a simple, classic band. Others might like something different.

Panning for gold is a great idea – might have to put the wedding back a decade or two whilst you get it together, but it would be a lovely touch 🙂

Wifes ring: Platinum, tiny, £343

My ring: Tungsten, massive, £27.50

My wife has a gold ring passed down from her family, and fitted to her finger size. I doubt it's worth a huge amount but it's sentimnetal.

I wanted a fairly plain stainless steel ring, which is near on impossible to find in the UK. I got one made in the USA and shipped over for about £60.

IMO the ring is not important at all, it's only what it signifies that matters, and if I had to take it off all the time because I was scared of it being damaged, I wouldn't see the point in having it at all!
I nearly bought a spare when I ordered mine!

My wife and I made our wedding rings with Richard Bett in Lincoln. Richard Bett Website[/url] Richard was brilliant – we went round after work to make them, and he kindly cooked us dinner too!

We talked through ideas we had and he helped us design them. We then (under careful supervision) made them ourselves from the blank little blocks of gold. It was brilliant, the prices were reasonable compared to plain stuff in a jewellers, and they are unique. As well as that, we learnt something new.

Try SMOOCH wedding rings. They come round to your house with about 400 different rings, you can have each ring in either gold, white gold, platinum and can add diamonds etc too.

So you pretty much design it yourself.

Mine is Palladium (same properties as platinum without the name), wifes is platinum with 7 little diamonds. All in £600 and we didn't have to step out of the house – oh and we had a bottle of wine at the same time which was cool.

Wifey has a "designed by us" wedding ring.

We went to a craft jeweller in Dunblane and just chatted to him about ideas. Wifey didn't get an engagement ring so she ended up with diamonds embedded in the wedding ring (as I said it looked like a bicycle wheel?!)

Can't resize Titanium rings so avoid if your wanting to be sentimental! Got mine made from Platinium (bout £100) instead looks like Titanium but can be re-sized.

I went to http://www.jeremy-hoye.com/ with a lump of platinum and some design ideas,he did the rest.

over an above my platinum it was another 5k for mine and my wifes (her's has 12 blue diamonds)

but they turned out exactly as I wanted.
important when you will be wearing this everyday for the rest of your life

His craftsmanship and build quality is really good, and one of the very few high street manufacturing jewellers we thought was actually any good, a lot of little independents quality is fairly poor.

If you want a plain titanium band, anymore than 25 or thirty quid really is ridiculous, it's pennies worth of metal and no more than a few minutes work. I used to do titanium bands for a tenner or so.

We had the wedding at the bottom of the grand canyon ,just the wife and I
photo and video guy ,helicopter pilot and priest.
Feeding relatives and guests is the expensive part 🙂

I'm in the same boat looking at wedding rings soon. Unfortunately gold prices are pretty high at the moment. I haven't bought yet but for a plain white gold band for myself and a platinum one for the missus we;ve been quoted in the region of £1k, hand made.

I have the details of a jeweller in Winc who was really good when we made the missus engagement ring, and he actually worked out slightly cheaper than the high street.

I'll check out some of the companies people mentioned!

Same as my wife and I, except my tungsten ring now resides in the washing machine somewhere.

Titanium wedding rings

Ti makes the best bike frames (apparently) so why not wedding rings too! cheap and they take paypal!

Wife and I both went Platinum. Mine was about 700 and hers about 300 from Tiffany, Bond St. We went with Tiffany as the wedding band matched the engagement ring I got her from there. Platinum prices escalated a couple of weeks after we bought though.

Get your wife a nice one and yourself a cheap one.

Titanium here. Cost around £50. Pretty much indestructible and if I lose it then I can afford to replace it.

Ti, great oh yeah, buy it in summer – doesn't fit at all in the winter, loose it after having dropped it off numerous times already in random places. Also someone pointed out that were you to injure your hand and need to get the ring removed your hospital would need special cutting gear – this played on my mind way too much.

Easy to cut and size replacement on order at the moment!
