Medium/long range weather forecasting, it's a mixture of science and pure guess work.

TBF it was a great winter & spring but July has been wet and windy as the last 2 years and now August is set to be the same.

I cant believe anyone seriously believes the BBC weather forecast its a national joke or should that be national disgrace. I dont know who does the forecasting for Channel 5 but they seem to be much more accurate perhaps because they dont try to show off and give a forecast for a week in advance. Anyone who knows anything about weather can tell you that the further in advance you go the less accurate the prediction and anything more than 72 hours is pure guesswork.

Sweden's weather forecasts nearly always mention the bad weather in the UK, as it usually effects us here on the west coast of Sweden a day or so later. Can't get a more accurate forecast then that!

Totally believe it. If you look at dendrochronology (tree ring dating), there is always it seems, a cluster of similar rings, so expect a few wide (wet) years after the narrow (dry) cluster of years leading up to and including 2006 that we've had!

We were spoilt, if you like it hot and dry, this is more like an English summer.

Good for tree growth of course, and sapling survival, plus the sale of winter/mud tyres! 😉

It was the Met Office that made the 'BBQ Summer' prediction not the BBC
The BBC is always a bit on the pessimistic side IMO

It is a bit crap, i mean 4 years in a row now its rained during my holiday, this year ive moved my weeks a little as the weather seemed better when i went back to work, so im hoping it will be nice in 2 weeks time, if not i will have to go aboard at chrimbo!

Yup, has been a cack few years. Used to love falling back in love with the bike in the summer months after a good six months of mud and wetness. So much grippier, so much faster, and trotting out the house in shorts and t-shirt. Blow the dust off when you get back.

Sad reality is that the best time riding I've had in the past three years has been sept-Nov. Don't mind the cooler temps, ridden some nice dry trails, it's just a shame you can't go out riding till nine and it still be light.

Don't really agree that this is a typical British Summer. Admittedly bit optimistic to expect endless cloudless 30 deg days but I really don't mind cloudy days and lower temps. It's the wind and rain which is getting me down.

Saying that, although not been on the bike as much, done a fair few peak carnival fell races and all the ones I've attended have been on glorious sun drenched evenings, even in the middle of a week of cack. Maybe we should schedule fell races for every day during the summer. They clearly have magic powers forget pine cones.

    We've had a pretty impressive spring/early summer don't forget?

I sat in geography at school about 15 years ago and we were told how summers would become windy and wet and winters would become milder (essentially windy and wet)as global warming took hold. Unsurprisingly this has come true yet people seem more dismissive than ever of global warming and its effects.

get a grip. weather in the sunny sw has been pretty consistently ace since christmas, with only a few weeks where the rain has set in. compared to last year i've already had more dry days riding than all of last year total.

maxray, whilst I don't deny GW, wouldn't agree with the assertion that three wet and windy summers in a row is definitive proof of its effects. After all, the two years before that they were scorchingly hot. Anyway, let me stop there, I'm at risk of turning this thread into a debate about MMGW.
