Watches N+1…

At what point did “my” Elliot Brown Canford become my “new” EB Canford?
I stopped wearing it a while ago so thought I’d mix things up with a few new EB straps.
Nothing unusual there, but when I received the straps they didn’t actually fit so I sent the watch and one of the offending straps off and they returned it fitting perfectly – in a new style case. Which was nice.
Anyway, I still didn’t wear it much, the white hands on silver dial weren’t as contrasty as my current tastes demand so off it went again…
It’s now got a black dial and chapter ring for max contrast and the white on black looks great, the 3/6/9 markers gives it a touch of being a better executed Explorer.
And just now I’ve realised the hands are different, the lume is much blue-er than it was and lasts longer to boot.
So, given I’ve got a new case, dial, hands and strap (battery) is this the most trigger’s broom watch on the forum?
Kryton57Full MemberYes, we need pics of the EB
@Kryton good choice on watch number 6. If you feel brave enough to modify it a little bit I recommend the MM300 hands I fitted to mine
I don’t want to to spend any more money on it TBH, it is literally a summer beater for me and sits on that side of the Watch box. Actually my 14th watch if you count a Fenix. I’ve two to sell (Geckota and Citizen AT Eco drive), six collector / daily’s (SMP, Aquaracer, C65 Compressor, Arnie, King Samuarai and Presage Cocktail time), then the 5kx & Baltany as shed/pool watches. I’ve 2 G’s, a 5610u and 6900.
I only really wanted to remain with the six and a G, but I baby/look after watches so the six are a core valued collection of which the King Sam and Presage may be exchange for others quality and rarity over time, the 2 G’s, Baltany and 5kx I’d not be upset to scratch.
dizFree MemberHi does anyone have experience, good or bad of using a watch winder for either a Seiko kinetic or Rolex perpetual?
pk13Full MemberMy cranford is on its way back after a new battery and pressure test will await delivery.
ElShalimoFull MemberAnyone know where I can get an orange 20mm sailcloth strap for not silly money?

Anyone know where I can get an orange 20mm sailcloth strap for not silly money?Watch Bandit, it looks like
pk13Full MemberThat’s a very different watch now. It’s more defined with the dark dial
tall_martinFull MemberMy Seiko kinetic is 15 years old and on its second capacitor after 11 years.
It’s never run down in all that time. It might need worn for a week every so often as in every 6 months.
I just let my mechanical and auto watches run down and reset them. It’s a slight joy 😃. None of mine need more than time and date.
No watch winder for me
1IvanDobskiFree Member@pk13 – yes, it’s even more defined in real life, it has a much starker contrast between the black and white than that image suggests – the dial is actually black black not the sort of charcoal colour it seems to have come out.
CountZeroFull MemberIt’s funny, the G-Shock CasiOak is still on my wrist, and I’m not feeling any desire to swap it for any of my mechanicals. I guess it’s because it’s so light, and with the faux Alpine strap, which is very soft and comfortable, I barely notice I’m wearing it. Having a nice clear analogue face helps as well.
There’s another one in the shop with a similar face, but positive rather than negative supplementary digital display, but with a bright yellow case, which I’m feeling oddly attracted to. I’ve got a black alpine strap, which would replace the yellow silicon strap, which I find sweaty and uncomfortable.Hmmm. 🤔
Kryton57Full Member@countzero there’s a new one coming with BT, solar, Positive display and canvas strap – black an chocolate brown versions for £119, I’ve got my eye on the former but refuse to buy one for the same reason you’ve cited. https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GA-B2100CT-5A/
A few are appearing on eBay but I’m sure they’ll make the UK market.
2KatoFull MemberAlways disliked the bracelet on my 1861 Speedy because of the male endlinks. Couldn’t stomach the price of the 3861 or the bracelet so gave the Uncke Seiko US1479 bracelet a punt. Very comfortable due to the female endlinks and taper down to 16mm. Quality is nice too, obviously not Omega quality but then it was only £110 with a milled clasp. To be fair the friction pins made sizing a lot easier than the tiny Omega screws too. Has made me love it on a bracelet again!
KatoFull Member@diz a watch winder won’t charge up a Seiko Kinetic
i have a winder and never use it. Came free when I bought a Tudor GMT. In fact if any of you want it, cover the postage and you can have it
it’s this one but don’t be fooled, no one is going to pay £350 for that

@diz a watch winder won’t charge up a Seiko KineticOf course it will, the clue is in the name.
But what you really want for a Kinetic is a wireless induction charger. Seiko did do one but it’s long discontinued, so people are using toothbrush chargers instead. Some work and some don’t, so DYOR before buying anything.
KatoFull Member“Of course it will, the clue is in the name”
It absolutely won’t. I’ve tried, and even Seiko say a regular watch winder won’t charge the capacitor on a Kinetic
tall_martinFull MemberDid Seiko say why a winder won’t charge a kinetic?
I wear it, the roto spins about, the watch charges. What’s different with a winder?
1KatoFull MemberSomething along the lines of a watch winder doesn’t provide enough momentum to charge the capacitor. They are designed for winding a spring and don’t rotate fast enough
i have a kinetic watch. It won’t take a charge off the winder but will if swing it back and forth with your hand which is obviously a lot stronger movement
1pk13Full MemberMy Elliot Brown is back from them
It’s definitely had a polish and the grey strap looks suspiciously new. I also suspect it’s had the glass polished as it had a fine scratch that you could feel with your finger nail before it went in and it’s hardly apparent now.
Came back in a new box too.
Service, battery and pressure test all for £40 and if you have a blue light card 20% off .
1cojacalFull MemberI’m interested in the collective wisdom about Seiko Kinetics (and winders!). My Kinetic was a daily wearer, and pre-gps sea kayaking navigation tool, for years. Kept amzing time. On my way to work listenting to the today proramme was nerdy to listen to the time signal and realise Seiko Kinetic always bang on. Not even close, just exactly on time, for ever.
Mine was a gift in 1997 from my late wife, a year before we were married, and consequently I’m kind of attached to it. What stopped me wearing it was the surround to the date window detached and jammed the hands, I don’t know when maybe 2010 or so. I then didn’t do anything with it until 2022 when I opened it up and put the date window surround back where it should be .. and it all worked, and I posted on here about it, but at that point it became apparen tthat it had no ability to store charge in the capacitor. Then the date window surround fell off again and it went back in the box of watches that don’t work!
It is a project I want to fix though. Any comment or advice on Kinetic capacitor change appreciated.
In the interim, I can’t imagine why a winder wouldn’t charge it. When it was young just picking it up would make it go for days!
I love love the beating heart of mechanical watches, but Seiko Kinetics also amazeballs!
neilnevillFree Member@robbo1234biking any update yet? Have you managed to get a reliable expert to value it yet? We are…I am intrigued!
4Blazin-saddlesFull MemberImpending self assessment rebate means it’s NWD! Picked up a decent deal on a mint 2023 sapphire sandwich. Temporary strap until I can get the bracelet resized from the comically small wristed previous owner.
robbo1234bikingFree Member@neilnevill Milton’s only offered £1000. Watchfinder have offered £2100 so we will likely go with that. It’s just not a fashionable watch at the moment. Thanks for the help though
neilnevillFree MemberDid he give you a valuation or just the offer? The low offer reflects his ability to sell it. Either he has 30 the same currently or more likely he knows he specialises elsewhere (sports rolex) and so only attracts customers for those watches.
Wf offers are decent if they don’t have a glut of similar watches. They may drop the offer once they inspect it but yours seems in excellent condition so I’d hope not.
johnnersFree MemberJust had an email from Helm – apparently I’m getting to the top of the waiting list and an offer of a titanium Khuraburi is coming in the next couple of days.
I’m pretty sure it’s at least 3 years since I put my name down for one of these, now I’ve about a week to decide whether I still want one!On the yes side –
It’s an original design and I do like its rather “have it!” styling
It’s Ti and I’ve a slot empty for a Ti watch in my “collection”
On the minus side –
I’ve as many dive style watches as somebody who rarely even goes swimming could possibly need
It’s on the large side for my current tastesAny thoughts?
2johnnersFree MemberWell, yes,I see your point.
Although given your tendency to vacillation and history of watch hokey-cokey I’m just not sure you’re best placed to make it!
Kryton57Full Memberlol, fair point.
I’ll tell you where i am (today 😉) on this subject; is that watch something you’ll covet for what it is? And or are you buying it for it fulfils a function in your collection? If neither of those stand down albeit the willpower of “it’s available and might be another 3 years if I say no” must be a struggle. But you’ve waited a long time and that’s a very nice piece to own you should be totally convinced by now, if you aren’t and with my sensible head on if I were you, I wouldn’t.
With some sold and some up for sale I’m down to 6 cherished watches and 4 beaters of various sorts, I keep looking at 2024 watches, back at my 6 and saying no becuase my heart isn’t in it, and that’s the key.
johnnersFree MemberAll good points, they don’t really move me on any though.
I think I’m where I still love the idea of it but I’m less sure I love the watch per se. The relative rarity is definitely a factor because if I pass this one up it’ll be a while until I get the opportunity again to acquire one. On the plus side I’m pretty sure I can move it on at little or no loss so it should be relatively risk free, though on the minus side once I get something I rarely let it go – one aspect of your collecting I’m a bit envious of!
It’s $410 delivered, plus of course whatever the IR hit me for so not Omega money but in the context of the kind of watches I buy it’s not entirely trivial either.
CountZeroFull Member@Kryton57 – had a shufti at those CasiOaks; nah, not taken with those at all, I don’t like tertiary colours, those really don’t do it for me.
I wouldn’t normally go for a yellow Casio, but being able to swap the plastic strap for a black Apple Alpine-alike balances the bright case.
The one thing I’m finding is I’m not precious about the Casio, I just don’t think about banging the thing against walls or anything substantial – I just don’t care. 🤷🏼
Kryton57Full MemberI wouldn’t be envious of that, you’ve no idea about the emotional knots I tie myself in with these decisions each sale / flip feels like a failure to me. Many will find that odd and that’s what leads to my sale / purchase vacillation – validation that I’m doing the right thing.
I don’t envy your decision, it’s not easy. At they’d end of the day they are all tiny machines that do the same job, for me it’s how emotionally tied to their loss due to their personal appreciation and reasoning behind that appreciation that helps decide the initial purchase. I’d hasten to add that that last sentence has only materialised since I acquired my SMP, which I’m hugely appreciative and attracted to.
neilnevillFree MemberBalls… this website is flaky
I’ll try again. Johnnners yes get. Pass it on if you don’t bond.
Boblo, nice dial but I don’t go for the bezel so much….I like the ceramic mine has. Dread to think what a ti one costs, they Are scarily expensive in steel!
1johnnersFree MemberJohnnners yes get. Pass it on if you don’t bond.
Thank God for that, Kryton’s being far too considered and thoughtful – that’s more the kind of feckless affirmation I’m after!
3tall_martinFull MemberI changed the capacitor on my kinetic watching a YouTube video and going veeeeery slowly with tiny screwdrivers.
It was fine. The watch runs the same and is back to keeping excellent time and charge.
Pretty much changing a battery, it’s just deeper inside the watch.
£20 odd for the capacitor. Half an hour or so to do it including watching the video several times before I opened the watch.
Kryton57Full MemberThank God for that, Kryton’s being far too considered and thoughtful – that’s more the kind of feckless affirmation I’m after!
I apologise what was I thinking! I had had a couple of beers….
jeffFull MemberIt’s funny, the G-Shock CasiOak is still on my wrist, and I’m not feeling any desire to swap it for any of my mechanicals.
Fallen out of love with mine, back to my Seiko5 as it has a clearer face.
