If required, by court order, to disclose information, they can provide the following (and more)…. and I’m assuming the criminal isn’t using a proxy of any kind. Just a plain home router, straight onto the internet.
1. Which account the IP was allocated to at what time.
2. Who the registered holder of the account is.
3. Their billing details – CC number, bank details (for DD), etc. The
police *may* need a separate court order to ask the bank for more details, if the ISP does not have enough.
4. The postal address of the account holder.
5. The MAC address of the router connected to them (used to forensically tie the home router and a PC at the home together)
6. Last time the router logged in and synchronised.
etc etc etc.
(In other words, LOTS of info about the IP given to them by the Police)
(And I’ve had to disclose this information while working at an ISP…)
Cougar – STW Towers are bound by the Data Protection Act, so can’t give out peoples personal info to anybody unless legally required…
