Volvo Xc 60 diesel anything to look out for?

downhilldaveFull Member
Looking for a used Xc 60, had a look online and they seem Ok. Looking for an around 2010 4×4 version, probably with quite a few miles. Which is the better engine the 2.0 or the 2.4? Prefer the manual but seem to be a lot of auto’s out there, are they Ok or best avoided. A full service history is obviously a must with a higher mileage car is this Volvo only as in is there any kit an independant garage won’t have access to. Is the petrol version any good as they seem a bit cheaper, and what sort of Mpg do they get in real life? Thanks all.
bikebouyFree MemberI’ve got an XC90 R design with the auto 2.4D and I’ve done 70k in it with no issues whatsoever. I bought it as an ex demo (done 7k) with some extra kit on and in all honesty it’s been bloody perfect. MPG I get between 30-40 at best, turning circle is a bit rubbish though. It’s big car the 90 but if you can’t find a 60 you might find a decent high mileage(100k +) 90 with all the bits on for <£14 for an 07/08/09 any later than that and they price around £17k-£20k.If it’s space for bikes then I can get both bikes in on their side with wheels on and rear seats flat.
I looked at a XC60 too at the time, but they’d not long come out (2011) and they were more expensive for the equivalent R Design than the XC90 I bought. I did test drive one, nice car, nimble, bit like an XC70 on steroids. Not as high as a 90 but lovely inside and to drive. If you prefer the manual then go for the Petrol, most Volvos in Diesel form have the auto. If you can live with the auto (which is perfect BTW) then I’d expect ave MPG IRO 30 odd in town.
I’m chopping mine in next year and will probably look again at the 60. But will have to check out the rear space as I like to keep my bikes inside the vehicle..Does that help?
CHBFull MemberThe 2.4 5 cylinder Volvo Diesel is a rock solid engine and well proven.
We have a 10 year old XC90 with 130,000 miles on it (D5 Auto) and though it will never impress with cornering agility its a fantastic family car. I would always go for the D5 if I could. Volvo Autos are not the most efficient in fuel, but they are reliable.takisawa2Full MemberCHB, what’s yours like on MPG…?
Considering one to tow our caravan, as our Galaxy has yet another £500+ warning light just cone on. 🙁cdaimersFull MemberI had a 2l xc60 edrive, great car, loved it, rubbish in snow and wet but good build. Got 36mpg normal run around in cumbria and rural driving. The 2wd was heavy on front tyres, changed around ever 10000 miles.
higthepigFree MemberHad XC60s for over 5 years now, both the D5 awd version and love them. The 2.4D5 is very quick but thirsty, generally I get mid 30s mpg, if you drive carefully you can get the high 30s/low 40s but it is tedious! Early XC60s had a problem with the electric tailgate, there was only a powered ram on one side, this is changed on the newer models. The headlights are on all the time, you can put sidelights on, but they do not turn off when you stop and there is no warning buzzer to remind you they are on, quite a few times I’ve walked away from it with lights still on. I have managed to get about 18000 out of the tyres. Servicing is expensive if you don’t have the Volvo servicing plan, it is variable, 12 months or miliage based on how you use the car, mine have been 12 monthly and it is in tomorrow for its second service, expecting to be about £300 or so lighter after.
Had a couple of problems, one with the tailgate as mentioned, had a battery replaced when the stop/start stopped working and recently had a steering rack replaced, all on warranty.
Bikes fit in easily with a wheel off and the seats down, but you do have to be careful with the trim as it marks fairly easily.
Thinking of getting rid of mine, narrow lanes where we live and my wife does not like driving it here as it is quite wide, just can’t think of what to replace it with.russ295Free MemberXc60 2.4d auto here as well. 2010. Black with full cream leather.
Only done 33k but had no problems apart from a dodgy sensor on the airbag thingy?
About 30 about town but 40+ on a run.bobloFree MemberHigthepig, how have the service plan price wise vs standard servicing? Just booked mine in and it was £410 quoted vs £350 service plan. Is that typical? Does the SP include MOT when over 3 years and do you have to pay monthly or can you make a one off payment? It’s interest free but I prefer to pay outright.
higthepigFree Memberboblo,
Not sure, when I bought both cars, they were offered with 5 years free servicing in the UK, I couldn’t do that as I was exporting them. Hopefully someone who has bought/used in the UK can answer, sorry.bikebouyFree MemberMine was pre that deal 🙁 Costs IRO £500 ish per yearly service.
Not bad considering the size of the thing.
DavesportFull MemberMrs Davesport’s got the XC70. I test drove several prior to purchase. The D5 is excellent & has a bit of power in reserve for towing. The D4 seemed underpowered to me. The auto box has been excellent & makes for relaxed driving. After three years from new & 50K nothing has gone wrong. All the trim outside & in has remained tight & there are no squeaks or rattles. Things to look out for. The brakes on mine (discs & pads) F & R were worn beyond their limit after three years. The front anti roll bar drop links are also prone to wear. Check all the electric stuff is working IE boot lid, electric parking brake & that there are no warning lights showing. The tyres seem to last a couple of years so they might be worth factoring in if they’re worn.
Nice MoTah.
ThrustyjustFree MemberD5 XC60 AWD R design owner here. Bought at 42 k miles on a 10 plate 9 months ago and now on 52k miles and all is good so far. Dealers aren’t all straight, as this is my second Volvo and both had ‘hidden’ issues. So sometimes a Volvo specialist is better. VOE. Great car and moved up from a V50 to this. Initially seemed big but is no different when you get used to it. Some parts shared from the Galaxy, so some things are cheap. I got new rear discs and pads for £90 a set. Not had the ‘pleasure’ of a Volvo service, but that does include any software updates and a years breakdown cover included. MPG is not great, but for the weight of it, it goes fine. We are 205 bhp in ours and it wafts well. Boss has the 2ltr 2wd version and is crap at getting off the line, with wheelspin and tyre wear a bit tiresome. Not that he provokes it. R design adds a few nice extras and premium sound is just brilliant.
bobloFree MemberDo they do the satnav update as part if the software update? That is one tiresome way to spend an afternoon as the car goes to sleep every 20mins and the update takes 5hrs…
ChrisAFree MemberJust taken delivery of my new 64 plate xc60, I had my last one for 3 years before that an a v50 for 3 years before that too! My last one had 90k on it before I swapped it. Electric Tailgate is done by recall now I think. I had 2 problems with my last one, the radiator had a slow leak on the push joint, Volvo couldn’t find it, so it went to an independant garage that found it. Second issue was the alternator that failed. Apparently its a really comin fault on the xc60 & xc90.
Apart from that it’s a brilliant car. Expensive to buy these days but for me it’s the mix of being able able to do everything from taking the dogs out to putting to seats flat to go to the tip. It’s super comfy, the D5 is fast & a great engine.
The only problem I had with my v50 was the air conditioning condenser which is located just next to the radiator & picks up stone chips. Mine broke, but they might have moved it on thxc60, I didn’t have a problem with it on my last xc60
downhilldaveFull MemberCheers guys, all looking good so far. Just having a look on the various Volvo forums.
ThrustyjustFree MemberBoblo, depends, as the later cars use a hard drive for the sat nav. Mine uses CD’s , which I can get the update for £30 ish. As for the hard drives, I don’t know
bobloFree MemberI have the update, I just want them to do it’s a PIA to do. Mine’s disc based and take hours.
ThrustyjustFree MemberI was told to get one of these to update the nav. Not done it, but is this what you have ?
http://satnavstore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=33&product_id=73bigshepFree MemberBikebouy, you surprise me. Never knew you had an XC90?
We’ve got a D5 auto, and following on from what the majority has said the auto box is great.
Would love to get an XC60 for the wife once she kills her Honda CRV.
bobloFree Member@thrustyjust. They send you a number of updates (2 IIRC) from new. I applied the first and it took ages. They sent me another updated set of disks and ICBA to install them.
sharkbaitFree MemberWe’ve had an XC90 for 13 years and BIL is on his second XC60. He has had no problems with his in 6 years but he’s ready for a change.
Our XC90 has been OK but as early adopters we did have a number of failures. Compared to our new car, it feels pretty dated (unless they’ve changed the auto box completely it really isn’t great but adequate). That said Volvo make good cars and I would recommend them from our experience.

Bikebouy, you surprise me. Never knew you had an XC90?Well there you go, see I don’t always let on what I have got. it’s mostly used by MrsBouy. Only thing I should mention are the 5 spoke alloys.. They take a proper kerb battering in London where it spends most of its time 🙄
Fat-boy-fatFull MemberXc60 d5 here too. I’ve got an auto. This is my first auto and I really wanted a manual but when I test drove it, I kept clipping my foot on the centre console when operating the clutch. To be honest, the auto suits the car, it’s not exactly sporty! The car seems bomb proof so far. Great in the snow, thirsty but dead comfy. I don’t even take the wheel off the bike when chucking it in the back (and my bike is an XL 27.5 wheeled thing). Definitely recommended, even if it is a bit fugly. Oo, one last thing … It does have lots of toys but they can sometimes be a bit inconsistent (the rain sensing wipers particularly). Rubbish sat nav though.
