We holiday in the uk and amongst tenting, lodges and caravans, have been to the following places.

North Wales
Northumberland.
Derbyshire
Lakes
Cornwall
East coast.

Just deliberating this summer’s destination and fancied Scotland but worried about midges and it possibly being a but city based.

Three kids, 15,13 and 9. They don’t mind a museum or three but like a beach too.

Such a large island to go out yet I’m struggling to find the perfect destination.
As a guide, north wales fits our bill the best.

South Wales? Gower nice for beaches, Pembrokeshire for rugged coastline and wildlife.

Northumberland is rubbish keep away.

Given the list I imagine you want to try somewhere new ? Dorset – tank & car museums (boys ?), beaches Bournmouth, Poole or further west into Devon. Rolling countryside for walks and biking ? Water based activities in Poole harbour ?

Nick, we thought of south west wales but at the moment, can’t decide on a good base location.

Definitely avoid Northumberland. Dreadful place.

Pembrokeshire is also terrible. Especially around beaches like Barafundel, Fresh West and the like.

Swanage is nice, busy part of the world though. Scottish Glens would be my choice..

Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower is horrible

We loved staying at Port William on the sw coast of Scotland. Still possibly the best family holiday we’ve had. Hidden beaches, mtb, cream of Galloway, Scottish stage of british rally, castles galore, bbqs and champagne on beaches with absolutely no one else there, kirkcudbright tattoo that had the clan mtb team there also with some awesome drummers, some more castles with boat trips to get to them. ..
We’d go back tomorrow!!

Edinburgh/East Lothian. East Lothian has some of the bestest and quietest beaches in the UK. Plenty to do in Edinburgh and the Tweed Valley isn’t far away.

North Norfolk.

Great beaches, great seafood, steam trains, the Broads, nice road riding, Fat Birds in Hunstanton, the amazing Bewilderwood for kids of all ages ….

We stayed at Deers Glade campsite, very nice. Though just realised that was way back in 2012.

Don’t waste your time with Devon. Crap beaches, nothing for the kids, godawful riding…

Kent. No, seriously. Some very decent beaches, castles, museums, Hornby/Scalextric/Airfix centre, cliffs, coves, daytrip to France, daytrp to London etc.

Mrsmidlife though I was a bit bonkers bringing us to Kent from Yorkshire for our half term jollies last year, but we had a great time. Hired a cottage in Deal a hundred yards from the beach and used it as a base. I’m going to try Surrey next year.

Heritage coast campsite, Monknash, S.Wales.
Great beach great pub. Idyllic.

I suppose I meant, I asked previously about Scottish Borders and it sounded good but (possibly) to the unaquainted, the attractions we might be tempted to see are city based….if that makes sense.

We’ve stayed at Peebles and near Kelso in the past – Edinburgh was about an hour away from both, Glasgow was a bit longer but still doable in a day. No real midge issues when we were there in July.

September last year in Dumfires and Galloway was midge free apart from one damp day up at the Red Deer range. When my head got bitten to death as I forgot to spray repellent on my hair.

And I believe that there was some nice riding near Peebles 8)

Scottish West coast exploring the islands. If you get sunshine, there is nowhere better. Great beaches, big skies & many stars, whisky, cheese, visiting the island shop / unlocked shed with honesty box for fresh veg etc…
