U.S. Presidential Election 2020

There’s talk of the Dems impeaching but delaying proceedings for 3 months. I assume the deal will be put to Trump, resign now, else in 3 months you will lose all legal immunity and post presidential priveledge
The art of the deal eh?
thols2Full MemberThe backers, the complicit, the money, the establishment he is so fond of saying he is not part of (but is the worst of) is turning outs back on him.
His behaviour as President was always a curse for his long-term business because he went out of his way to offend half the U.S. population and everyone else in the world. In the short term, he partly compensated for that with money from MAGA sycophants booking his hotels for conferences, but most of that money was bound to dry up the minute he left office. His brand is tainted with boorish behaviour, so most wealthy people won’t want to be associated with it. That was before the coup attempt. Now, they can publicly disavow him instead of stealthily just keeping their distance. He’d be a fool to try and travel internationally because every ambitious lawyer in the world will be looking at ways to drag him into court and no foreign leader is going to treat him to any sort of official invitation and provide him with diplomatic immunity. He just doesn’t have any friends left outside of the nutcase MAGA crew. The Republican Party politicians who are sucking up to him will only do that as long as they’re scared of him. That is quickly draining away.
inksterFree MemberDunno thols2, Saudi Arabia might offer him asylum. After all, that’s where Idi Amin ended up seeing out his days. He could build a golf course, I’ve heard the bunkers will be uuuge.
inksterFree MemberThe Military is more radicalised than we think. I remember Barack Obama visiting the troops in Iraq, and the look of horror on his face when he realised that fox news was the news channel the Army fed the troops. It was like fox news was forces news, stamped with the army’s seal of approval.
We know the Police have been radicalized. I expect a lot of job vacancies coming up and a recruitment drive at the FBI.
MoreCashThanDashFull MemberIt was done in the name of ‘healing’ the nation. Remember that the next time a politician uses the word ‘healing.’
That is usually the problem with “healing a nation” – the alternative at the time may be unpalatable, but the long term consequences may be just as bad.
thols2Full MemberDunno thols2, Saudi Arabia might offer him asylum.
Yeah, I’m starting to think he might really end up hiding in Russia or the Middle-East rather than face the consequences. Once his lackeys start to turn on him, the whole thing will collapse and everyone will rat everyone else out to try and avoid prison.
dakuanFree MemberThe tech clown shoes thing is a pretty basic and serious goof. They have little chance of migrating an at scale AWS setup to bare metal. Im still baffled that Cloudflare are happy with thedonald.win being a customer of theirs given the whole thing was literally planned there
TheFlyingOxFull MemberThere isn’t even a sniff of a chance that the US alphabet agencies let a *President* flee to another country. Especially not a President that has shown himself willing and capable of acting against the USA’s interests. The national security risk would be unthinkable.

Let’s see if his passport gets revoked when the legal charges start rolling in. He has a private jet and international business, so easy to slip away under the pretext of a business trip.

Eerily quiet here in the Twitter Sewer. Thought for a second I went to MySpace by accident. Many people I follow have been vaporized by left wing tech tyrants. Hopefully they will reappear on Parler and Rumble… pic.twitter.com/wU5lKM6V9c

There are a lot of sycophants at all levels, the Donald appointed the top layer, and they in turn appointed the layer down etc Biden can clear out the top layer but their will be a lot of resistance and obstruction all down the chain IMO Remember when some local law clerks refused to process gay marriages, that sort of policy undermining is going to be going on in all government agencies for years IMO.
The secret service lent one of their senior agents to the Donald to run his campaign FFS. Comey, despite his denials and later being thrown under the bus for not being loyal enough, politicised his role and tipped the balance of the 2016 election.
I wouldn’t rely on “the alphabet agencies” to come good any more than I would trust the GOP to do the right thing.
thols2Full MemberThere isn’t even a sniff of a chance that the US alphabet agencies let a *President* flee to another country.
I mostly agree, but they would really have to revoke his passport if they wanted to be sure. He owns an international business and a private jet, so travelling abroad is normal for him. He will have a permanent Secret Service escort because he’ll be an ex-President. In the U.S. or Nato countries, the Secret Service agents could call in help if he started doing anything suspicious, but in many other countries, they will be powerless to do anything if he decides to make a run for it. Which means that the U.S. government will need to prevent him leaving the U.S. if they have any suspicions about him. I do think it’s highly unlikely to come to that, but it’s no longer unthinkable.
On the bright side, he never paid any attention to classified briefings. He probably doesn’t actually have much information to trade anyway.
gobuchulFree MemberHe will have a permanent Secret Service escort because he’ll be an ex-President.
Not if he is impeached.
We can only hope.

kimbersFull MemberImpeachment won’t happen, still needs 2/3rds of senate need to vote for it
The Reps are still too beholden to trump’s base for that
Hes too arrogant to resign, even with threat of impeachment in 3 months- which is more likely to succeed IF his reputation has been trashed enough that Reps aren’t scared of him any more (still unlikely IMHO)
I’m genuinely amazed at how spineless the GOP have become, (but it’s the same with the Tory party in the UK)
mrmonkfingerFree MemberThe PGA of America has cut ties to Donald Trump
That’s his business prestige all but extinguished.
Highly amusing re: geotagged photos on parler… oops.
matt_outandaboutFull Member^ that mistake by Parler could be very costly for some of the extremists and their buddies.
wzzzzFree MemberThe Trump brand is turning completely toxic.
Maybe his golf playgrounds will be “let go” and nature will take its course. I can’t imagine he will sell them all as they are so fundamentally part of him.
kimbersFull MemberInteresting to see how Andrew Neil & his Tufton Street chums are trying to rewrite their support for trump
Well well well. The Spectator have changed the headline on @DouglasKMurray’s article on Trump in 2016 from “Donald Trump won't be as bad as you think” to “It’s time to consider the real Trump”

SuperficialFree Member^ that mistake by Parler could be very costly for some of the extremists and their buddies.
Indeed. It has echoes of that EncroChat system that all the drug dealers were using. Parler users put too much trust into a single system that was clearly poorly (or at least hurriedly) engineered.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EncroChat
It’s hard not to watch this without a smirk. The downfall of Parler, Trump on Twitter etc is amusing for all of us who don’t appreciate the spread of lies, but I do have sympathy with the Republican position that we have become too reliant on a few huge providers.
The reason Parler is gone is because Amazon Web Service (AWS) refused to host it any longer. That’s fine but I know first hand how easy it is to set up hosting anonymously on an AWS system, and I’m sure there are thousands of sites/services which break Amazon’s ToS. They have not all disappeared overnight. Essentially, whoever is head of AWS (Probably at the instruction of Jeff Bezos) made the call that Parler needed to go whilst those other sites have stayed. Oh, and Bezos has had a long-running spat with Trump.
Essentially, 4 people at the heads of Google, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook have the potential to control the narratives we see online. That’s utterly mental. Currently they are using their power to act in my interests (mainly anti-fascism), but it should worry all of us that this technology can be controlled in this way.
There’s also now talk that DNS providers like CloudFlare might start censoring their responses to DNS queries. For anyone who has ever thought Net Neutrality was important, this should send shivers down their spine.

Technically, the impeachment is done in the House. After he is impeached it is sent to the Senate for a trial. He will probably not be convicted in the Senate, but he will be impeached. Last time, he was impeached but not convicted. He will be the first President to be impeached twice.
kimbersFull MemberYou’re right, sadly he will take impeached & not convicted as a vindication, again
I think it would be brilliant to have Pence as a president for 2 days, as it would ensure that trumps infamy would be known to every US schoolkid reciting lists of presidents 😁

I would argue that FB & Twitter are very much not acting in my interests, but that’s probably for another thread.
molgripsFree MemberEssentially, 4 people at the heads of Google, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook have the potential to control the narratives we see online.
Well, not exactly. I mean they can pull sites that breach T&Cs but they can’t pull sites that don’t. And you can very easily spread misinformation and lies without breaching T&Cs.
They also only have the bluntest of tools available, which isn’t that effective. There is still a demand, so someone will host or they’ll finally realise how to spread their message whilst staying within the rules. The heads of those businesses aren’t allowed to edit or moderate the content, are they?
mrmonkfingerFree MemberThey can change their T&Cs, if they wanted.
Maybe they could add, for instance, ‘deliberate misinformation’ or some such other vague catch-all.
PJM1974Free Member^ that mistake by Parler could be very costly for some of the extremists and their buddies.
Oh my. I’ve seen some of the Parler content that has been shared to reddit, I’m not linking to it because of the extreme nature of some of the posts. 70TB of metadata will be poured over and I daresay that that extremists will be doxxed. Freedom of speech does not equate to freedom from the consequences of hate speech.
Seeing the Barclay bros owned media backpedal like this is amusing, plenty of people have screenshotted the original articles.
Keep the receipts people.
thols2Full Memberthey can pull sites that breach T&Cs but they can’t pull sites that don’t.
It’s a company, not a public service corporation. They can kick people off their servers if they feel like, as long as they aren’t stupid about being racist, etc.
fasthaggisFull MemberHes too arrogant to resign, even with threat of impeachment in 3 months
I think it should just be the Donald and Arnie, head to head with swords on the White House lawn. 🙂
thols2Full MemberLet's be clear: For the far-right groups that carried out Trump's insurrection, the siege of the Capitol was a huge success, a major propaganda coup. I talked to experts in right-wing extremism about what this event really meant to them. Alarming stuff:https://t.co/EzjeGsTlZK

inksterFree MemberAs I understand it you only need to get a 50% +1 vote for impeachment to disbar someone from running for office again? This would make sense if the Dems want to impeach but delay the hearings. It puts an end to the question of how many Republicans need to vote alongside the Dems, the numbers are there already.
JamzeFull MemberThe reason Parler is gone is because Amazon Web Service (AWS) refused to host it any longer.
I’m wondering if Parler will pop up again hosted on Alibaba Cloud. Would be an interesting situation for Parler folk to get their heads around, and US regulators to pick over.
MSPFull MemberI’m wondering if Parler will pop up again hosted on Alibaba Cloud.
Despite Trumps rhetoric, it doesn’t suit China to be in a diplomatic war with America and the west, and that’s not their usual MO, they just want to conquer the world with trade. Russia may end up hosting it though, their political aim is just to disrupt as much as possible, and hosting parler would certainly aid that mission, and I expect the proud American patriots would find a logic to accept it is a split second.
inksterFree MemberWatching the RW go into melt down due to the archiving of all parler posts is very satisfying.
It’s like a burglar complaining that it’s not fair because he didn’t know the building had CCTV.
PJM1974Free MemberSome VERY prominent Tory MPs on Parler, quite a few joined on the same day. So far we’ve one outright denial from an MP…

I wish more people would wake up to this. These companies need to somehow be broken up in to smaller companies. Notice how the anti big corporation sentiment has died down from 2010? Notice how the pro-privacy advocacy also seems to have died down?
With how much tension there has been in the four years(and probably even before 2016) leading up to 2020, something was bound to happen after the election. I don’t agree with anything to do with the latest incident, but a part of me is happy, that for once its politicians that may have felt the fear, and not Joe Blow and his corner store getting torched up with the usual public faces adding more fuel to the fire.
As you well said, what goes around can come around. Example: Trump passes a stretch of a bill to crush the BLM riots, this bill is now being used against his supporters that stormed into the Capitol.
dudeofdoomFull MemberMmm Trumpism’s not gonna go away thou, just going to find new figure heads and a new server host for whatever platform it ends up on.
Not having a mainstream outlets going to slow it picking up more followers but it’s already got a lot of followers.
Probably the beginning a new era of it rather than the end.
