Tyres for my winter commute on a CX bike – cheapskate

Firstly apologies for a ‘what tyres’ thread.

I’m commuting on my CX bike 22 miles each way and currently run 35c CX Comp tyres which are fine, but punctures are coming thick and fast and I don’t really head offroad on the commute other than a few gravelly roads/paths. They are wearing fast.

So what tyres do people recommend to replace them? Puncture resistant, 35/38c width, decent rolling resistance, capable of a bit of gravel and as cheap as possible. On-one curbcrawlers and Vittoria randonneur 2s look alright, any one using them?

Vittoria Voyager Hypers are doing grand for me, cheap at PlanetX and lighter than the Randonneur if I’ve got my versions straight in my head.

I’ve got a set of Marathon Cross on my skinny wheelset, but yet to properly use them, hopefully fitting new chain to go with new cassette in next couple of days.

Best I’ve found for your kind of riding would be continental sport contact, they roll almost as well as a race tyre. Really no use for dirt though. Great website to compare is one called bicycle rolling resistance.

Forget CX tyres if you’re worried about punctures…you need big touring tyres.

As said, Schwalbe Marathons are great. I’ve also got some Specialized Armadillo 42mm tyres that are very puncture resistant.

Landcruisers.

You’re pretty unlucky if you’re puncturing them before they’re worn down. Way cheaper than Marathons or Armadillos and won’t split on the sidewall if you let the pressure get too low.

22 miles each way on CX comps – Chapeau! I’d recommend a set of 28C touring or even race tyres. Durano Plus would be a good choice as would Marathon Plus (same tyre with tread). Tyres are always worth spending more on. It’s where performance has really improved in recent years.

44 miles a day on Landcruisers would not be my first choice for a commute. THey are cheap but you are riding for over two hours a day.

They’re not light but I’ve been pleased with their robustness and reliability, which was my main goal for a commuting tyre

I run 32s

Sport Contacts were excellent, currently on Sammy Slicks which seem good for 1000 miles or so till the tread wears and the first puncture reminds you go change them.

The fastest rolling Marathons are probably a good bet, far less draggy than some of the older ones.

I’ve been running fast rolling tyres on the basis that it only takes 10 mins or less to remove glass and chuck a new tube in, and I’d add a lot more than that on per week with slower tyres (about 10-11 miles each way for me). I may regret this if I get a puncture somewhere really inconvenient in shitty weather though!
