Trench Detectives

I love this programme. absolutely amazing what they find out from a few remnants of uniform and personal effects.

True dedication to their work and they come across as really caring about who they find and treating them with total respect

Not seen the programme in question, but we do find it fascinating going over to the Somme, Flanders and Verdun to see what's there (and there's loads).

Fantastic places and very memorable.

We were in Flanders a few years ago and saw some very fresh excavations. Raw and not a little voyeuristic in a lot of ways.

Menin Gate at 8:00pm always brings a tear to our eyes…

I'd recommend it if you've an interest in the 1st WW…..went to the Menin Gate a couple of years ago and there was a highland regiment there with a lone piper playing…..one of the most moving things I've ever been at

What is truly moving is that somehow money and person-hours are still available for identifying and providing proper burial for long-lost bodies.

I suppose it's because WW1 is still a war with surviving relatives – my maternal grandfather served in the trenches. Obviously, he survived!

Just a question though. How far back can we take it. Lots of people know they have ancestors who died at Waterloo – should we start opening the grave pits there?

Lots of Scots have ancestors who died at Culloden – ditto?
