Playing ice hockey yesterday and felt a twinge in the right knee, carried on as though nowt of it. Then in the next game I was turning to the right and felt something snap/move.. Went down like a ton of bricks and felt like it has popped out. Couldn’t get up for a good couple of minutes, managed to hobble off and get ice on it. Couldn’t put much weight on it yesterday but never went to A&E.

Was meant to be working at 2am, woke up and knee is swollen up, feels like fluid around knee cap, can’t straighten leg or put any pressure on it, looks like the kneecap is slightly off to outside of knee…

Will I die? Should I visit the A&E or just MTFU?

By the way we won the Scottich Cup so worth the injury IMO… Yeehah!

its serious but not life threatening so see your own GP or call nhs help line for advice / walk in centre, sadley my friend it takes ages if ever to fully recover torn ligaments are nasty very painful, rest your leg continue with ice packs see your GP .

Yep, I’d also say GP (call first thing for an appointment on Tuesday) or a walk in centre. From the experience with the missus until some of the swelling goes down the diagnosis can be a bit vague.

Ice rest and time to get some private medical cover?

Hmmm.. This sounds exactly what I need… Not! Just ordered loads of bits for a new build aswell, and bought new running shoes!

I’ll phone NHS 24 and see what they say, my GP surgery a a total nightmare for appointments. Didn’t sleep very well with it, it’s throbbing and very tight.

Thanks for the info folks, useful as always.

Get it seen to. When I tore my lateral ligamant in my knee I thought it was the end of my active life as I knew it. After 1 night of such pain as can’t be described I got down A&E and they stuck a fibreglass cast on my leg and got it MRI scanned. Cast was on for a couple of weeks and then about 6-8 weeks of physio/electroshock treatment. Then lots of cycling since it is the best exercise for knee injuries. Now many years later I try and remember which leg it was. I have never so much had a twinge out it since it healed, which I put down to having had it treated properly at the time. Does your team not have a sports injury specialist. Would have through it would be one of the most common injures seen in Ice hockey. Funnily enough I did mine while out hiking in the Alps and slipped over on the ice!

Did my acl years ago and just got on without it, getting cartilage sorted out on Friday but apart from a few painful incidents it’s been fine. Specialist seems keen to sort cartilage but reckons I’ll survive as long as I don’t alter my lifestyle too much.

Nah it’s just a Recce team.. We don’t even have team water bottles let alone a physio.. I’ll be making a call to NHS 24 shortly.

Right knee gate update.. Went to A&E as advised by by NHS 24, ligaments ok, cartildge damaged and knee dislocated, possible fracture but need swelling to go down before we will know for sure.. That’s summer pretty much written off then! : (

Could be worse tho as a friend was airlifted off Glentress yesterday..

Yeah I was hoping for slightly better news but ligaments are a bigger pain in the ass to heal than a fracture or a dislocation I would have thought..

Bit of rest then. Knees are can be a bugger so take care.

Ligaments ok is a bonus. Ruptured cartelige can be repaired effectively. I’ve ruined my acl and then ruptured the cartelige. Not had either fixed, but its only the latter that bothers me-it kind of pops out here and there which is a bit gross.
If i was’nt self employed i’d take the time off work (not in summer!) and get it fixed.

Go to A&E and push for an MRI. You don’t even know what is wrong at the moment and that is a crucial part of the battle to sorting out dodgy knees. Don’t fanny around with a GP and think a bit of MTFU pills will solve a ligament rupture/ other soft tissue injury.

Damaging ligaments is not life threatening as others have said but it can potentially make an active life bloomin’ miserable for a looooong time. The quicker you can get a proper diagnosis and treatment the better the long (and short) term outcome. Could be numerous things that happened to the knee and get it sorted sooner rather than later!

I should have said that when I did mine I was living and working in Germany and the care and treatment was first-class. Had the MRI within a couple of days and proper targeted sports-physiotherapy. A couple of years back I had a pain in my other knee. Went via GP and took a couple of months to get a few sessions of generic physio and by the time they got round to sorting me an MRI scan (over 6 months) the injury had more or less healed itself. I still have twinges in that knee but the one I damaged in Germany has never been a problem.

As said above, you really need to push for an MRI scan at the soonest possible opportunity and try and get a sports injury specialist to look at the results, even if it means paying for a private session. You only get one body, look after it.

@1981 – you need to see your doctor and insist on an MRI, that’s the only real way to know what damage you’ve done. In the meantime lots of icing. FYI Ibe broken the ACL in both knees, one in my 20’s and the other in my 50’s. Get it looked at by properly qualified people ASAP, A&E can’t help you. Good luck.

What you really need is a trauma clinic appointment I’d have thought and to get the opinion of an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I’d have thought that A&E is a much quicker route than the GP. I’m not sure what the official protocol is in the NHS but my experience of GP’s is that they tend to assume it’s nothing serious since if it was then you’d have taken yourself to A&E and suggest 6 weeks rest/ anti-imflamatories/ generic physio/ etc and before you know it you’ve wasted 6 months and eventually get a scan and see a surgeon too late post injury. A&E on the other hand refer to trauma clinic straight away without messing around. This may not apply everywhere but has been my experience of GP’s/ A&E. You might even be able to self refer to trauma clinic and certainly should be able to self refer to NHS physios who might be an alternative route to trauma clinic if the GP isn’t initially all that helpful. Maybe some of the STW docs can be more hepful with the exact routes to getting the right help?

Thanks for the info guys. I’ll see how it is over the next 48 hours and go from there. I’m happy the Ligaments are ok, the possible fracture is concerning but I’m sure id be inker pain if this was the case.. The dislocation is a worry as I already have a shoulder with a tendency to dislocate.. It’s another hockey injury!

I’ll phone the GP tomorrow anyway and ask to be referred to the trauma clinic…
