Todmordon route for Wednesday.

I will be driving from Bournemouth to Oban on Wednesday and want to stop for a ride on the way, any 2/3 hour route recommendations? Strava gpx links appreciated.

Personally I’d be avoiding the area to allow them to clear up from the large flood they’ve just had.

That would be a big detour to ride trails that really need local knowledge to get the best out of.

Cockpit to Howtown is my standard recommendation for M6 ing.. Pooley Bridge being only minutes from the M6

As above, Tod is a long way from the M6, and will certainly feel like it.

In terms of most bang for buck, how about the route which goes from the back of Tebay Services, Issue 59 page 18 of the mag archive? Either that or something from Staveley (Kentmere) or as above, Pooley Bridge.

+1 for a ride from Staveley instead.

Garburn Pass plus the HP Plantation loop would fit your 2/3hrs bill.

I’m not fussed by the detour, I normally stop in Wharncliffe or the Peak, but fancied something different.

I’ve looked at some of the magazine rides, but it seems you need a Komoot subscription to download a GPX, or am I missing something?

Echo the thoughts of others, They had a bunch of rain there over the weekend, and the place will still be knee deep on Wednesday, I’d avoid.

It’s not like there’s just the one route, I think you’d be able to do some choice routes both on the way up and down.

Wow, so it seems. I’m sure you used to be able to grab GPXs as a full member without having to be a full member of something else?

All the trails in Tod are normally pretty bad at this time of year, but we’ve just had a weekend of non-stop torrential rain, some of the roads are still flooded and everything will be knee deep in mud or flood detritus. I haven’t been out since the floods but in the past when we’ve had this much rain a lot of the trails needed work and were pretty much unrideable. If you must come then stick to the main bridleways like London Road below Stoodley Pike and the Pennine Bridleway.

GPX files are in member downloads, alongside the pdfs of the mag. But we don’t have Classic Rides any more, so there aren’t any for recent editions. And I think issue 59 was before GPX existed, so there isn’t one for way back then!

I’m not from round there so i’m no expert, but would it be easier to just go to lee quarry and do that and cragg? No route map needed, easy to burn a couple of hours, slightly closer to the M6!

with the short daylight hours at the mo, how far north do you reckon you’ll be when you want to break for a ride?

if you’re setting off at say 6am, would you hit the M62ish by say 11?

Someone more technologically minded will have to explain how I use the links against those editions to download an actual gpx file I can import into Strava etc, just opens up a load of gobbledigook when I click on them.

Here’s a route that makes the best of the bridleways and more weather-resistant trails around Tod. Word of warning the descent into Hebden is rocky and technical and I’ve no idea what state it will be in after the weekend’s weather as it would have been a waterfall (There’s an easy detour if you stay on the main track). Think you should be able to download the GPX. Honestly though you’re better off waiting til another time.

Thanks all, @tractionman yes that’s the biggest issue with the lakes, Will see how I feel but may just leave at 4.30/5.00am, have to be at the ferry terminal in Oban by 4.30am on Thursday.
