  • Time Roc ATAC carbon or Shimano XT pedals
  • Hi all, I need to get some new pedals and I’m trying to make my mind up between Time Roc ATAC Carbons or Shimano XTs. When I first started MTBing, my first clipless pedals were Shimanos (this was around ’99), although I could never get them set up so that I didn’t have knee pain so I switched to Time ATACs. The Shimanos used to clog up with mud too. I’ve always used Time since then, and the greater float meant that I never had knee pain again.

The Shimano pedals have a different design now, so I was wondering if they’ve got more float and sorted out the mud clogging problem. The XTs are being heavily discounted at the moment, which is also influencing my decision. What do you reckon – stick with Time or give the XTs a go?

on Shim pedals float can be increased or decreased with different cleats IIRC. Time ATACs can be varied by swapping cleats over. I got ATACS for more float so I would recommend the ATACs myself but haven’t used Shim’s for several years now – don’t get me wrong I did like the Deores I had until the axle snapped and my mate recommended some ATACs – 5 years and still going 🙂

ATACs for me, too many mates have problems with Shimano pedals, my Times just keep on turning.

Stick with ATAC’s … spd’s may be getting better, but still not as good as atac’s

i moved just from spd on my mtb to time atac carbons..

def more float and they work well.

never had any issues with spd, but have ing had spd since they were first released just fancied a change – plus got a good deal in the sale.

i think the use of the term ‘float’ in the pedal world is used wrongly..

spd allow rotation around a centre point – it is adjustable, but only as a result of changing the release tension..

different SPD cleats (black or gold) just give different release options.

Times on the other allow rotation (two amounts depending on which show you have have the cleats, but also the cleat can move laterally in line with the pedal axle… spd does not do this at all.

I think (and just my opinion) that this lateral movement sounds more like float..

If I had a dodgy knee [which I do] & I’d found a set up that alleviates it there’s no way I’d think of changing just for the sake of change
It doesn’t make sense to me

Thanks everyone, just ordered some ATACs from Planet X

On SPDs the rotation is a fixed amount and is only variable by swapping the cleats over (single SH51 or multi-release SH52). The amount of effort required is variable by changing the release tension.

OK were splitting hairs here on what we define at float but essentially allows your heel to move laterally?

    multi-release SH52

As a note 51’s and 52’s are single release and 55’s and 56’s are multi release. that only thing different about the is the release route offered..

multi release cleats are terrible – who uses them? and they really do not have any more ‘float’ that single release… though they do release in loads of different positions (mainly when you don’t what to!)

also rotation on spd increases over time (sic) as they wear… I find left ones wear most as that is the foot I put down

It seems to be… though as above you can do this with atac’s – heel in and out laterally but with the cleat rotating on the pedal, but also with atac you can also move you who foot laterally i.e. the cleat can move laterally in relation to the pedal.

it is this latter feature that i think helps with their comfort.

the most comfortable SPDs were the original double spring XT ones
