Had a short storm earlier today, not too much rain, but some close lightning, one which struck the A350 about half a mile away happened while I had an Openreach engineer working at the top of a utility pole getting a fibre optic line across to my house! At least it’s a traditional wood pole.

Yeh had them all morning where I am in Angus. Thunder, lightning, squally , and very heavy rain with hailstones too. Then after lunch the sun came out and it’s been lovely, still breezy, but warm and bright

Bit of a rumble or two here this morning, with a bit of rain, not exactly what I would call a ‘thunder storm’, though.

Yep thunder and some rain this morning, complete cloud cover and threatening skies until about lunch time.  BBC forecast had sunny intervals with 0% chance of rain all day long!  It did brighten up and get very warm in the afternoon and now its a beautiful evening.

Woke me up about 6am here in Glasgow but it passed and was a lovely day afterwards

Passed over me en route to Longdog I think, strangely high and reasonably light looking cloud, a few rumbles which preceded it closing in, lightning, stair-rods, then 10 minutes later it was all over.

    Lovely night now.

Nothing North West – looked like it might and a few showers but cleared up this afternoon. Been ‘sticky’ working in the conservatory.

Excitingly clammy in Rochdale (apparently around 80% humidity) but nothing. Parents had some thunder earlier in Fife.

Likewise, though it was as I went to bed.(keeping funny hours currently)

Day nice enough to do something productive by washing the front windows.

We had a yellow thunderstorm warning.  Didn’t see any yellow thunderstorms, it just spotted with rain for a bit.

Thunder and rain at Donnington Park today for one session whilst we were doing a track day, it soon passed and then was blazing for the rest of the day.

Woke to a fabulous crack of thunder at 7am…

A house a few hundred metres away was hit by a strike and subsequently caught fire. Fortunately the three occupants made it out safely.

Serious question.. why would it catch fire? too much lead flashing in the roof or no grounding…..?

Thunderstorms and rain around lunch time here – apparently half an hours worth at home near Ilkeston, only 10 minutes in Nottingham.

Trails mainly dusty tonight, a bit damp under the trees.

    why would it catch fire?

I’m not a fireman but I thought that it could have been electrical? All my electrics went off when it hit but it turned out that the RCB had tripped. I reset it and spent a nervous few minutes checking out our appliances and devices.

Well, yes lightning is electrical by nature, but I’m still none the wiser. I mean, houses being set on fire from this is quite unique… really old & dodgy electrics in the house?

It was by no means an old house. Like I said, just taking a guess.

    Not that unique…

I’m just trying to understand the science…

a strike will try to earth as easily as possible… if we consider that is one house among a lot of very similar houses…why would it ‘choose’ that one house as opposed to a phone mast nearby or whatever?

Quite loud thunder today in Sherwood Pines. There was a heavy downpour but it only lasted a few minutes.

Very, very humid though. It was like riding through a rainforest.

Once that little storm cell blew over, it was a lovely afternoon and evening, and significantly cooler than yesterday too, which was a blessing.

Had the longest rumble of thunder here ( about 15 secs ) while I was in the shower, then I realised it was the wife bringing the wheelie bin in.

Had a storm yesterday morning, lasted a couple of minutes,  then it brightened up and the humidity kicked in.

    Unbearably hot.

Yesterday morning…drove into work with thunder going off above me, was wet and a few lightning sparks.
Got to the office and the security guy at the gate is standing on his own waving his tablet about – almost like a rain dance. Shouldn’t be a real issue but he is about 6’4″ and was the tallest object around for about 100 yards. Anyway, got past him and just as I parked, the whole sky lit up and a massive thunder clap. Both felt right over the top of me.

Cleared at about 12 noon and was a roaster for the rest of the day!

It doesn’t ‘choose’ ,just hard lines if your house is in (or close to )the path. The same as those golfers in America that get zapped every year, wrong place at the wrong time.

It may have been due to a wood burner. When you stick a metal flue up in the air above your house it could act as a lightning conductor. Just a theory but  it may have made a nice flow path for the negative ions to meet up with their positive brethren on the ground.

^^^ that’s interesting, as the media pictures of the house in Aviemore show a pretty tall wood burner chimney sticking out the wrecked roof remains

I’m atop Monte Grappa…. Big clouds brewing with lots of thunder and lightning.

Last week in Friuli I thought there was someone outside the van with a torch, looked outside and the whole sky was being lit up by a massive thunder storm in the next valley.

    I love storms.

Sunday’s thunderstorm in Morzine produced some pretty serious hail. More storms tonight, it was so hot today, even up the hills.

When i lived i swiss world we got a thunderstorm every day in the afternoon – the locals called it the 4pm storm. Some were spectacular and would go on all night. Used to coincide with my ride home from work.

Thundering in menorca this morning, still bloody roasting!

Losing 15° and getting the garden watered without anything getting destroyed locally has been quite nice.

Terrible, I had to take shelter from the rain in the bar at 3pm (Cala n Bosc).   On the plus side a 30min soaking is good for the local flora and wildlife. Another round at 6am tomorrow apparently before it clears up for a few days.

    Please don’t.

@richardkennedy you may be one of the families I’ve spotted during my morning or evening walks – found a nice little circuit from the Hotel to the Port along the coast, back past the lighthouse and home again, 5km.  Many people eating outside 8pm ish

Away from the bustle it’s a lovely area.

@kryton57 we can’t believe how quiet it is, some days wandering round the town there’s hardly anyone about, coz we’re with an 8yr old we’re out a bit earlier than others for tea and others no problem getting in anywhere. Went to the water park t’ other day and it was relatively quiet, virtually no queues, no fight for sunbeds, no problem getting food etc. compared to the Sandcastle back home which is unbearable in the season.

Sky foreboding again…. Hope the last couple of days of our holiday aren’t a washout.

We’re up beyond the lighthouse a bit, it’s generally pretty peaceful
