The wife & I agreed we didn’t like one single character in the film so just didn’t care when it ended as you felt nothing for any of them.

2.5hrs of our lives we will never get back IMO

I’m glad it’s not just me, it’s one of the most drawn out and tedious movies I can remember seeing at the cinema, I was close to walking out.

I think one has to like PT Anderson, though.

I love Magnolia for example.

Whereas, I think it’s one of my all time favourite films.

Try out Slow West, in the same vein but a moving and beautiful film.

I think it’s superb, I heard mixed reviews but saw it anyway at the cinema and subsequently a few times recently. I think the Johny Greenwood soundtrack feels unsettling and matches the mood of the film well, Dano is brilliant over the top as Eli and DDL plays his part well. Can’t see why it gets so many mixed reviews if I’m honest.

I really like it. The friction between DDL and Paul Danos preacher is superb imo. I also like the unusual soundtrack by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead.
The film is a slow burner, but there is nothing wrong with that. Makes a change from the comic book super hero dross.

It’s strange how to defend a film you like people have to have a parting shot at something else as if to justify a position. There are some bad films out, most are lazy, unimaginative and going for cheap crass laughs or worse doing a genre badly. The current crop of super hero stuff although not cinematic master pieces seem to be on the whole decent blockbuster brain out films. With the exception of the transformers series of course 😉

I love the sparseness of it, the portraits of driven men like Plainview (the sort of men who are lauded in America for “making” the nation) his unrelenting need to succeed, and the madness that envelopes that. He’s utterly remoreless,and uncaring about who or what gets in the way of that, his “family” his own sanity…

+1 for liking this film. It carries a lot of depth to it, much of which is deeply unpleasant, and DDL is superb amid all this unpleasantness. But it is funny in places too. I love it greatly, but would probably not choose to watch it for Sat night entertainment, having seen it a few times already. Can see why it might be too much hard work for some though.

It’s not really meant to be fun. DDL played a horrible character and Paul Dano’s character wasn’t much more likable. I liked it, but if you think you didn’t like it, you’re probably right.

If you crave action and explosions, it’s not the sort of film you’d enjoy (although, ironically, there are a couple of great action scenes).
If on the other hand you enjoy the craft of film making – wonderful eerie soundtrack, beautiful colour palette and camera work, sense of isolation and tension built into the story, and excellent characterisation and to the point dialogue – plus a story of hardship and graft set at a pivotal point in the history of the US – then you’ll probably find it a very good movie indeed.
Sometimes it’s hard to accept a movie that doesn’t offer a gift wrapped ending. On the other hand, I find it leaves you to think a little deeper.

It was ok, not the best or worst film I’ve ever seen. No Country is in my top 10 of all time list. Bardem and Tommy Lee are outstanding

It’s weird how everyone seems to mention those two films at the same time. It’s interesting that when you mention one to somebody, they almost always assume you are talking about the other!

Think they were released fairly close to one another weren’t they? They were certainly up against each other for a fair few of the Oscars, with NCFOM taking best picture and DDL getting the best actor gong (IIRC?).

Anyway, thought then and still do that it was a masterpiece of film…perhaps let down by the milk shake scene. 😀

Probably not one for the easily entertained.

It was filmed next to Ncfom, filming had to be postponed a day while the cloud from the oil fire died down. They are both superb films.

I liked it, but wasn’t a big fan of the ending, which reminded me a bit of a clockwork orange, and it didn’t seem to go so well with rest of the film.

Great film, drags a bit in places, but great.
