    No longer a coastal dweller and I miss watching the waves.
    Send me a choppy fix.
    Ps don’t stand too close to the edge.

    This was Newhaven before the big flood storm we had a couple of months back;

    This is a customer’s ship coming out the harbour. Bear in mind this is a full size car ferry…

    That used to be the ferry which served Orkney and Shetland. I had a few rough crossings on her, none quite that bad though.

    There’s not so much wind here in Austria so it’s pointless showing you picturrs of the ocean lapping the shores here.

    No pics but I’m back in my home town for xmas and been told the tales of the tide surge from a couple of weeks back. The lifeboat house was in the direct line of the surge and the crew manned the station and decided it best to open the doors to let the wave through rather than take the force of it square on. They were on the gallery above the boat when they watched a six foot wall of water push through and leave twenty tons of shingle in the boathouse.

    @egf, how long ago was that picture taken? Not been anywhere near the piers in a while but they’ve tarted up the lighthouse recently so it must’ve been a while back.

    The waves weren’t that spectacular yesterday, although my kids still enjoyed it.

    It was very windy though, this newly planted tree was nearly uprooted and a gust took my son’s hat clean off his head and into the sea.

    @northernmatt, they are doing up the full promenade at Roker and may even drain the tunnel along the pier and re-open that.

    This picture (not mine)was taken at Seaham during the storm swell:

    I was involved with the replacement dock gates there a few years back and we designed them to withstand a swell. At the time the contractor queried how much rebar was going in but when you see the power the sea has, it’s satisfying to know the right choices were made.

    I think I’d be terrified and yet very excited if I was on that.

    No photo’s as I can’t link from my phone, but I’ve just seen photographs of waves crashing over the sea wall at Exmouth.. Not particularly extraordinary during a big storm at high tide, except for the fact that high tide is still over four hours away!
