Had a message this morning from someone who lives where I used to, saying a letter turned up from this mob and that they’re trying to find me. They photographed it for me before binning it, because they know better than to just willingly give out my details to anyone who could be anyone. Should I be worried? I don’t *think* I’ve done anything wrong, and I haven’t knowingly run up a massive debt somewhere, but I still don’t like it. It makes me feel guilty of something.

    Sounds scammy to me.

They are to do with pensions aren’t they, rather than debt recovery?

    These guys?

Could be a pension company (either a past one of your own or a dead relatives) have employed them to contact you.

Why don’t they just forward it on, then you can open it and find out what it’s about…

It is. They photographed it, told you about it, then binned it? Why even bother telling you in the first place?

I regularly get post for the previous occupant, it gets dumped back in the nearest postbox with “no longer at this address, return to sender” scrawled on it. The buyers of my old house were my next-door neighbours, I’ve heard precisely squat from them since I moved out two years ago.

Why didn’t they just forward it to you? It’s free after all.

Ah, no. It was addressed to them, not to me. They sent me a picture of the actual letter, not the envelope! Leaving it in my hands rather than theirs.
Still don’t like it, and suspect I’m going to ignore it.

So the letter was basically “dear Mr New Occupier, we’re trying to trace Mr Previous Occupier, do you know where they live?”.

I’d be calling them and saying “hello, I believe you’re trying to trace me, can I ask why?” and going from there. FWIW, my my mum was traced by one of those inheritance-tracing companies as it turns out a cousin that she never knew existed had died intestate, and she ended up getting a few quid. As long as you’re careful, what’s the harm?

I recently had a letter from a different tracing firm about a pension I had ~25 years ago. It transpired a recent legal judgement means the transfer value was a few % less than it should have been. If you are fairly sure you don’t have outstanding debts, and you have previously been in a pension scheme, it is probably in your interests to investigate.

I had one similar unanswered in a drawer for two years. Was going to bin it but thought I’d ring them. Turned out to be a pension I taken out when i got an endowment mortgage. I’d closed it down when I sold the house and forgot it.
    Glad I rang them.

I spoke to my wife about this as tracking down the owners of ‘lost’ pensions is something her company does.

The Tracing Group is known to her firm, but not used by them. The key seems to be will they charge you. Her company tracks people down and re-unites them with their pension/money using funds from the actual pension provider so they do not take anything from the person at the end.

Every week they have suspicious people replying to their correspondence, it gets even more fraught when they ask to see original documents such as passports and driving licences. Despite this suspicion they reunite people with £100’s/£1,000s on a regular basis.
