The great Shimano mineral oil drought of 2021. When/where can i get some?

One advantage of mineral oil over brake fluid is that it can be stored indefinitely, unlike brake fluid, which collects water. I think the primary problem with this is that it will presumably reduce the boiling point. Having said that I’ve used plenty of fairly old brake fluid in the past without obvious issues.

It’s all the rage in Germany, apparently, and solves the wandering bite point some people experience. It’s also meant to be better at lower temperatures.

In fact, I’ve just bought a litre during the process of typing this, as it inspired me to give it a go. It does void warranty though. So, fortune favours the brave, and all that!

First Google search suggested putoline in a reverb also as it used 2.5w mineral oil… Does that mean reverb oil works in Shimano brakes?
My big Shimano bottle is all but empty and I’ve got a few reverb bottles kicking about and thankfully no reverbs to use it in.

I’m sure Seth on YouTube ran baby oil in his for like 12 months to see how it went!!

baby oil is fine, but it doesnt seem to work on reverb (although that could well be a different fault)

Putoline sell a min oil… I use it.

i use Halfrauds LMH, ive been using the same bottle for years across a whole raft of brakes, not had any specific issues.
I think the lever feels slower, compared to a box fresh servo wave unit, but not enough to make me worry.
you certainly wouldnt notice out and about.

Does that mean reverb oil works in Shimano brakes?

Having ended up with numerous bottles of Reverb oil that’s what I’ve been using in my Shimano brakes for a few years – works fine.

Anyone tried low viscosity industrial hydraulic mineral oil like Castrol Hyspin AWS? If it’s good enough for critical hydraulic systems why not some brakes?

Viscosity is half LHM fluid, can be had for £10/l on ebay.

Doh! I’ve 2 sets of brakes to bleed just done one and proceeded to empty my Shimano mineral oil into the Rockshox oil bottle next to it, same colour! Not sure I trust those eBay sellers selling “genuine” oil. Anyone bought any or fancy selling me some genuine stuff??

Where are you?
If you can get to Woking quite happy to let you use as much as a bleed needs… I got my Mantel 1l and have the last 100ml or so left of the last bottle.

I have 3/4l of Shimano oil now use Magura brakes so don’t use it
