…we went (rental) house hunting at the weekend, found a place and have been waiting for the landlord to agree to us having it.

He has, and we’re moving to Whaley Bridge.

Backwater two-bit inbred rural Derbyshire, here we come 🙂

    Welcome to the HIGH PEAK!

Don’t worry its not as bad as the Mighty Mills, (You don’t get the subsidised rail fares though).

*tedious claim to fame that I alway trot out; I am entry number 1 on the High Peak register of births. It came into being on the 1st April 1974, one day after I did the same 🙂

North?! That’s over 200 miles south from where I am, and I grew up another 100+ miles north. Even then we could drive another 3 hours or more without running out of island. What you’ve got there is south!

    You’re moving too…. The Midlands?!!! 😉

welcome back to your spiritual home. Some great riding, straight out of the door from there 😀

The North starts at Crewe. Admittedly, from there it continues for quite a while.

Anyway, I’ll not allow you all to poo-poo my exciting news 🙂

The Great Move North – and the winner…

Well, the winner(s) would appear to be Marple, New Mills, Glossop and several other towns on the weekend’s NHVI*

    Tut.

Marple – houses weren’t great, she wasn’t keen on the place anyway
Glossop – house was nice, pleasantly surprising town centre, traffic awful (why didn’t someone say? 😉 )
New Mills – nothing suitable for rent.

Nice one – Whaley’s okay, it has easy access to some very pleasing road climbs and of course the remarkably beautiful A6 is a mere stone’s throw away 🙂

    Plenty pubs in Whaley

Navigation – Buxworth – good outdoor spot.
Old Hall – Whitehough – tolerates southerners asking for flat ales

hold on, these are near Whaley Bridge……. 😉

Whaley’s ok. You’ve got a Tesco on the doorstep to keep the missus happy and the Goyt valley close by too. One of my favourite roads is the one-way road along the reservoir and up to the Cat and Fiddle.

I’m not having that. Crewe’s closer to London than Newcastle!

Is there a local shop for local people?

Seriously though, thats a great choice.
Cracking location for all cycling, plenty of good local shops (check out peakpies in the butchers, drinkwaters for stwbuildingtrackworld stuff etc), rail… its all there. Enjoy!

    Whaley is quite nice.

IHN is correct though Crewe marks the start of the North.

None that you’d actually want to go to though… 😉
Actually that’s not true, the Navigation Inn at Buxworth is pretty good.

Northern England = Leeds and northwards – or have I got that wrong?

    Where the hell is Derbyshire?
Its just off the shetland isles isnt it?

For the avoidance of doubt, the “North” starts at the M42. It doesnt stop until it turns into Scotchland. After that you’re in eskimo/viking territory.

Stoner you are just so wrong. I always had you down as a reasonably cultured type. The M42 is the boundary between the south and the middlelands, which extend northwards past Sheffield.

If it helps get a map of England and draw two east west lines, one at one third along the north south line, and one at two thirds. Go on. We’ll wait.

Everyone knows the north isn’t a geographical location, it’s a state of mind 🙂

Have you done your final COTSWOLD pootle???? 🙂

    igm

Now that would make he south a state of mind too (though I shudder to think what – jellied eels anyone?) and the midlands either a state of confusion or a case of schizophrenia.
