Although you can expect some tory MPs to die during the course of the next parliament.

    Not enough of them, mind…

    plus 1

Democracy has spoken and it’s voted for a Conservative government. There has been an independence referendum, the vote was no.

Cameron can offer Full Fiscal Autonomy, Sturgeon says she wants it, but does she? She needs to find £7 billion.

    Another post from me 😉

Financial impact on the parties will be HUGE. Possibly the most significant impact of the election ?

The SNP will have some £7m in MPs salaries and office expenses. Given they can’t do much at Westminster that money can and will be spent on working on the broader SNP agenda of independence. Very significant positive for them.

Labour and Lib Dems will lose similar amounts, this will weaken both of those parties substantially losing resources they cannot easily replace.

Even if Scotland had united behind the Labour party it would once again have made no difference whatsoever. So really England voted for a Tory government and we all got one.

No, the SNP won’t be able to vote on English only laws. All national issues over the whole of the UK, like Trident, they can vote on. This makes perfect sense, any issue which Holyrood controls the SNP at Westminster should not be able to vote on.

So its a Union when it suits you and not one when it doesnt 😕

I dont disagree on the principle tbh but the English parliament cannot be at Westminster using the same MPs for england as for the UK. This is not how devolution works elsewhere. I suspect the SNP would be happy with the rule change though. I dont think treating england as special helps quell nationalism. If england has its own parliament it really needs its own parliament.

Dont all the devolved ones use a form of PR?

+1, it’s not an allowance like the EU, you actually have to spend it on relevant expenditure.

Lots of left wing mutual backslapping and talking to themselves

yeah – alternate that with all the handwringing and they never looked likely to impress.

@jonba – Agreed, Cameron will resign to give a new leader the chance to bed in prior to the 2020 election, 6 months before would be my guess. Miliband and Clegg are toast.

Whenever Labour lose it’s bogeyman politics; the country will grind to a halt, the weak will die etc etc.

Realistically, the world will keep turning. M

Maybe Labour will do better next time with Yvette Cooper in the driving seat, with a better plan than ‘we are not the Tories’?

No, the SNP won’t be able to vote on English only laws

But they were elected as UK MP’s not UK MPlight. England is part of the UK and the dominant part. English laws affect Scotland even if only indirectly. All MP’s should be equal unless the law is changed and people can vote with these changes in mind.

Yes but what will they spend their days working on ? That was my point.

Whilst UKIP won’t have many MPs they have been second in many Northern Labour constituencies and will take a share of the overall vote which will eclipse both the Lib Dems and indeed they will have more vote cast for them than have the SNP

Hopefully Lab will take notice of this and start looking after their heartlands again rather than relying on their unfettered support election after election.

Farage won’t win, even his big donor admitted it hours ago.

EDIT: Not expected to be second even, hence his tetchiness on TV. However he will get an EU referendum which is a major achievement. He won’t win it though.

Its only fair they wait until the pub opens before they announce Thanet.

Is Keighley in yet? I notice that Labour couldn’t even take Pudsey.

EDIT: Blimey, thought Labour couldn’t miss that one.

I don’t agree at all, its only right that with more powers granted to Holyrood and Cardiff the English MPs get equivalent powers. It won’t happen but the Barnet formula should be scrapped with he Welsh getting more money at Scotland’s expense.

Ed Balls would be the leaders “wife” (as he’s married Yvette). As @hora posted Chuka Umunna must be a candidate but is he Labour enough ? Hariett Harman will stand.

My gut feel is the Labour party will go for Harman with Cooper and Umana in senior positions. It could be temporary with a change of leader before the 2020 election

    Or Andy Burnham.

A great result for an electorate who clearly didn’t want yet another Labour government bringing the country to its knees.

Uncannily like that BBC drama of a few years back which everyone assumed was based on them.

Labour where claiming last night Farage would finish third, there was massive tactical voting campaign to keep Farage out. He will remain an MEP and proabbyl stand down as leader, UKIP have some other very strong leadership candidates (excuse me I don’t know the names but the guy from Liverpool and the woman)

An EU referendum is what we need, I expect the vote to be “stay in” and that will put the issue to bed
