Want to swap out the revoshift on my kids (6YO) Scott Roxter fore a trigger shifter

Current shifter is Shimano SL-RS 36-7 / Revo Shifter.
Rear mech is Shimano RD-TY300 / 7 Speed (Shimano Tourney)

Seems this is the matching trigger shifter, but wasnt sure about the button thingy.

Anyone done this on their kids bikes?
Ive also got a 6 speed to do on another kids bike too

Is there a SRAM option that would work?

Also is it worth persevering with the grip shift, Why do all kids bikes have grip shift, just down to cost?

Normally it’s because kids don’t have the strength in their thumbs to use a trigger, esp if the cables are gunked up or the drivetrain is caked in muck. a grip shift means they can use their whole hand. Why the need for change?

Trigger shifters are far better for kids, trust me I’ve got 2 of them that ride with gears.

Both of ours have Alvio trigger shifters on 8 speed and they’re bang on

Just doesnt seem to be getting it, I could just persevere, but want to know what my options are.

It does seem to be the case that the more expensive kids bikes, ISLA Bikes, early riders etc have trigger shifters though? Maybe thats because they are marketed at Dad and not the kids? 🙂

I’ve refitted Tourney TX50 and they are excellent for small weak fingers.

I’ve tried both of our kids with triggers, grip shifts and thumb shifters. Triggers definitely the most successful, though my daughter struggles with all three, evidently a natural singlespeeder.

So… anyone tried electronic shifting on a 5yo’s bike? 😉

Find an old sram rear mech then use an X3 7 speed shifter worst case.

Swapped my 5yr old Nephews grip shift out for a trigger and he finds it a lot better. Still needs reminding to pedal sometimes when shifting though..

Just remind me, SRAM Shifters wont work with Shimano rear mech right? its the indexing?

(I know my SRAM XO shifters work with my XTR front mech 2 x 10).

both my kids prefer trigger shifters. They’re easier to operate and it’s easier to shout out “press the thumb button” or “press the finger button” when you’re trying to teach them to anticipate a gear change.

SRAM shifters with names (Rocket, Attack, MRX) work with Shimano mechs. Shifters with numbers (3.0,X3 etx) will only work with SRAM mechs. Unless you get a Rocket or Attack mech. That’s for up to 9 speed. After that it gets complicated…

I helped a mate swap out a very sticky old sram gripshift thing for a trigger shifter. Think the mech was a sram 3.0 and I paired it with a new sram X3 shifter I think it was. Worked really nicely and only cost £12 plus a new cable outer.

The whole bike was a right state (as the majority of kids bikes seem to be) so I did a complete change of brake cables at the time and gave the drivetrain a full clean / degrease / relube. Just an hour or so on it completely transformed how it stopped and went. My mate’s little boy loved it and there’s been no stopping him since apparently.

    I’ve seen 1×10 Ultegra Di2 on U10 cross bikes.
