In the recent review is stated that the card works best with medium cage Shimano mechs…. So GS basically.

However the youtube vids and the official compatibility chart on is on distribution say it should use  the long SGS mech!?

What are you guys using on this cassette?

Orders a GS SLX mech…. How wondering if I need the long cafe XT instead?😳

    Help!😢

    No-on run the 11 50 sunrace?

Official compatibility is SGS… but STW review said to go for medium cage, GS…..

As for all the mech range stuff it will depend on the frame

Do you mean it could foul the chainstay or something?

Possible, but Im more concerned about the range needed.

This is from the STW review:

In our experience, it fits best with a Shimano 1×11 drivetrain and a medium cage derailleur (roughly 8.5cm between the jockey wheel pivots). If you’ve got a long-cage derailleur (roughly 9.5cm between the jockey wheel pivots) then it kinda fits, but it doesn’t work well, and some sort of modification is likely required to get it to work.

So compatibility chart says SGS…. STW review says short cage GS is the one to head for.

    Confused.com 😀

No the amount of chain growth and position of the mech on the hanger relative to the axle, I’ve see 2 identical setups on different full sus bikes and one just didn’t work as the position and the compression of the suspension would have ripped the mech to bits.

This will be on a hard tail so its just about the mech being able to handle the chain growth from 11 to 50?

Logic says a longer cage would be better, Youtube vids seem to confirm…. but STW review is the opposite.

I would have said longer cage. I had issues not too dissimilar on a triple setup on my tourer as I changed the cassette from 11-28 to 11-32, and the medium cage 105 mech wouldn’t reach the largest sprocket. Putting a long cage XT on there solved the issue.

I’ve had long cage xt with this cassette working absolutely fine for 6 months on a soul Mk2 built up as winter bike. Shifts really well up and down and no need for any modifications except  standard hi, low and b screw adjust/tweek. I really wasn’t expecting it to be as good! Saw the current ST  review and thought that it was kind of short sighted to base the global medium cage recommendation on trying it on just one bike!

    Kiwi, thanks!

I’ve just ordered an sgs XT March so it should be ok. Will have to see if I can send the SLX back….  but I took it out of it’s plastic sealed bag! Doh!

Thanks again for the confirmation! 👍

Just remember their are other variables like chain line and hanger geometry that will affect cassette related drivetrain noise/change quality between different bikes…..what works well on mine may not for your set up! Good luck and hope it works out for you too. It’s a huge cost effective range increase for 1×11 and has been perfect for simplifying my winter drivetrain.

Indeed but at least I know with the xt mech I have a fighting chance thanks to your info.

It’s going on a Primal, my son’s bike ready for spring. 😀
