anyone have any experience of sunn bikes? im looking at a long travel sunn kern to replace my snapped frame.
i can only find 1 review on the internet and it sounds like manufacturers spiel.

What’s attracted you to it in the first place?
It doesn’t look bad for a budget option to be honest, but it’s definitely an oblique choice.

Sunn are in my top 3 all time favourite bike brands.
I worked for a Sunn dealer for four years and owned four of their bikes. Still have one. All have been hardtails though, so I can’t tell you much about the Kern. Their main problem in this country is very low public profile as you’ve found so far. If they did more press and PR they’d sell more bikes in the UK.

Sunn make some brilliant bikes, there were quite a lot around late 90s but haven’t seen any for a while, both Anne Caro and Nico rode for Sunn when they were destroying the rest of the world.

no-one has any horror stories then?
after burrowing through the web a bit im reading some good stuff, looks like they had a nasty time in 2005 but have pulled it back and have had best mtb awards on 2 models in the past few years.
trouble is i had a flutter on an orbea rallon which was great but thats the frame i broke last week and they aint too good at aftercare which has put me off odd-choice bikes a bit
. . .still i was never one to run with the crowd

Get in touch with Steve from the The White Rooms Chalet – I think he had a couple of these last year as hire bikes and will give you the low down being a straight talking Scot.

Seconded, Sunn used to make class bikes

jonah, as ruddy says, we had a couple of Kern LT’s as our hire bikes last summer – in fact, they’re still in very good nick, so we’re keeping them on for this year.

Excellent bikes, I was really impressed with them. The kit spec is fantastic for the money, the geometry is great and the suspension feels very supple and active. Also very light considering the amount of travel (165mm at the rear, weight under 30lbs).

I rode one myself for a week or so while my own bike was waiting for a part and I really got on with it, to the point that I’d consider one for my next bike.

    Only complaints would be:

The stem on the Large frame is ridiculously long (those whacky euros, eh?). Swap it ASAP for something in the 50-70mm range.

The OEM wheels aren’t great. The rims seem to stay true enough and haven’t picked-up any dings, but we were breaking spokes on them all the time. I eventually decided they were over-tensioned and backed all the spokes off a bit, which seemed to help, but it was too close to the end of the season to be really conclusive.

In short, highly recommended. Compares very well with other similar bikes I’ve tried (Orange Alpine, LaPierre Spicy, Heckler, etc.).

The frames come up a wee bit small maybe – at 5’11” I can ride either the medium or the large, but the large is the better fit.

The French arguably look at the Sunn Kern / Kern LT the same way we look at the Orange Five – no-one has a bad word to say about it, rave reviews in all the French mags.

I saw this Radical on SDH a while back, I’ve no idea how it rides but damn I want it- even if it steers like a shopping trolley it’ll still be gorgeous while it crashes

No worries – jonah, meant to add that they apparently had issues with the swingarms cracking on the early versions of the Kern / Kern LT so I’d hesitate to buy an old one, but if it’s only a year or two old, go for it!

    That Radical looks awesome!

They do a nice wee steel Alpine hard-tail which I’m currently finding very hard to resist. 150mm travel and comes with a Hammerschmidt as standard. Mmmm….

Northwind – that’s my mates bike – Roost @ SDH.

It weighs sod all! Only swung my leg over in the car park for a quick bounce, but it felt nice 🙂 He’s also got the skills to go with the top-end kit…

This is the frame before that grey sunn above, which IIRC, was a warranty replacement for him.

My Mate has a Sunn Prim (s2 I think) – cost him about £900. He seems quite happy with it but it’s tyres and rims are pretty poo – he get’s lots of punctures.

Doesn’t look like it, some issues with moving factory and refinancing the company. Info (in French) here:

The Prim S2 has got pretty crappy spokes, but the tyres are ace. Hutchinson Pythons? They should be coming into season just about now – ideal for fast dusty trails. 8)

Interesting link there thanks – just run it through Google translate. Sounds like another bankrupcy proceedure and a relocation from St. Gauden to Tolousse.Says they’re looking forward to “working with new partners”…… I hope that means their bikes won’t be covered in SRAM in 2012. 😆

    Excellentbikes

I was considering them for our bikes, but an Italian brand MDE (we a re in Italy) gave us some bikes so coulnt say No!!

Sunn extensivly test their bikes here with us.

They are light, and look flimsy, but are very strong!!! some early prototypes I saw broke, but they come back with different designs to test….so at leat there is some proper testing and not leaving it to the customer…

So if you want a great bike at a good price that will make you different from everyone else then go for it..
