    You’re missing the point

    No i’m not

a minor disagreement about which bottom bracket is best is the same whether it is on a forum or in real life. If you call my mother an ugly old witc? It’s the same here or in a pub.

Well, for you maybe, clearly not so for others

There isn’t a magic dividing line that separates “real life” from the Internet. Changing your hat doesn’t change your head.

Not the internet, this forum. My real life extends to the internet.

    Am I real?

I thought we had concluded where you understood why folks talk about it not being real

I said I understood (after people had told me on this thread) how it is that they mistakenly believe the Internet isn’t real life.
It doesn’t mean they are right, I can just appreciate how they have come to that incorrect conclusion.

You can pretend its not real (which you have admitted is what you are doing) But it doesn’t change the fact that it is.

Not the internet, this forum. My real life extends to the internet.[/b]

So the Internet is the same as Real Life then after all. ?

    Wow. That took some doing.

The internet is not one homgenous entity, parts of it are real life, this forum, which is the context in which this dicussion has been taking place, is not, for me.

I said I understood (after people had told me on this thread) how it is that they mistakenly believe the Internet isn’t real life.

I don’t expect you to think they are right. I’m just glad that you now understand something which you earlier did not. I’m glad to have been a part of that

Zokes tell me more about those welsh fans who offended you at a football match that time, it sounds funny

There was a minutes silence being observed after Ken Bigley was beheaded and the video posted online. Only a lot of fans from the welsh end decided that would be a good opportunity to get a few words in. Hilarious I’m sure.

    You weren’t 😐

You aren’t real, and neither am I. Remember ?

You can’t congratulate yourself for achieving something if its not real can you.

That really is an oversimplification of what i’ve been saying, but you know that. Unless you think tht neither of us is real, then you can’t really use that as an argument.

What i see is that you started off not understanding, then we all had a discussion, now you do understand. So you have increased your understanding. Good for you. You might at least be a little grateful and graceful to those who taught you.

An ant is in the jungle. Says to second ant “I need to get me some pussy”. At that moment an elephant comes by. Ant jumps on elephant and starts exercising his ant-dick. As the elephant walks through the jungle, a coconut falls on its head. “Oww!!” says the elephant. “Yeah!” shouts the ant, “suffer baby, suffer!!”

sounds like you were offended or did you choose not to be?
Do you reckon england fans are any better? Why do you choose to bring these things up when we interact in this unreal place?

Well, to what else do you attribute your gain in understanding?

    I used the phrase ….

“I’ve never really understood why people think that”

Not really meant to be taken literally. Maybe what I should have said was

“I’ve always disagreed with people who think that”

I suppose I should have known better, as this is STW where its much easier to pick at the way someone says something rather than the thing they are actually saying.

But hey, if it makes you feel better to think you are teaching me something, then that’s fine.

Thanks for your (virtual) time and effort.

    But as you said earlier

you are not real and i have to protect myself from you becoming real.

So I have no idea why you care either way ?

well in my defense keef did say “no rules, just be you”….I hadn’t realised it was full of folk that acted like frigid maiden aunts

what he should have said is “FFS don’t be your usual self, there are a lot of folk that take themselves quite seriously on it” 😉

    Summary:

Some people think that a person typing out something on the internet isn’t real.

They also think typing something offensive is Ok as the person reading shouldn’t read it if it’s offensive.

    Others disagree.

Aye a summary post would be good.

IMO – the problem starts here…

Personally I’ve got much bigger things to worry about than whether or not someone somewhere might be slightly offended by something I’ve said or heard.

Again, dont want to personalise this – but my point (missed earlier) is that problems arise because (as in so much of modern life) these issues are approached from the perspective of “I”. We live in the “Me, Myself, I Society”.

The solution is easy – in theory….

    Cougar – Moderator
and not being offensive generally falls under “common decency.”

…Good old fashioned manners, but in practice this is hard (especially when provoked) which is why we need and appreciate the effort of the mods. When we (all) overstep the mark, we need moderation, otherwise anarchy could ensue, or at the very least people would be put off using what is a very good forum. And who wants that?

Summary: Seems it was all a misunderstanding. Neal said he didn’t understand something, so i tried to explain it to him. What he meant was that he didn’t agree with it. I see no reason why every needs to agree about conceptions of reality, though the New Scientist special issue on it was interesting. If i had known that’s all it was i would have just noted it and moved long.

Well I’d guessed that bit; it was the following bits that I was hoping to have answered:

Do you tell individuals if they’re being over-sensitive/unrreasonable ?
Do you always inform the original poster that it’s happened at all ?

Charlie mungus is a paranoid delusional odd bod that just comes on here to argue with people that he doesn’t believe are real and is actually frightened of

Paranoid? Where do you get that from? Delusional? You mean with a different view of reality than you? I’m sure that includes many people so am in good company. Odd? once again just different from you. I can see you are uncomfortable with that. I’m not here to argue, as stated earlier i came here to help and to educate. There are many other threads i could have visited if i were looking to argue. I chose to respond to one where someone said that they did not understand.

I’m not afraid of people i do not hink are real. I fear that these unstable and unpredictable people about whom i know very little, ever enter my real life and impact on that.

If you want to pretend otherwise then that’s fair enough.

    Anything to make you happy.

that’s a shame as i’ve met loads of the unstable and unpredictable folks of this forum for selling and buying stuff, chilled out rides, at races and general piss ups and I couldn’t have asked to meet a nicer more diverse bunch of people from all walks of life.

This thread has been an interesting read. I’d actually seen the Fb page that started it off, did a 🙄 , and ignored it, but many on this thread have made some interesting points, far too many to go back over and c’n’p them, although I will point to tazzy’s up there ?and say spot on. The whole cyberspace/meatspace argument does get into a whole philosophical area that can get very bogged down, though, and I prefer to think of any online social interaction, be it STW, Fb, Twitter, or whatever as being essentially the same as F2F, (face-to-face), and try to treat people the same irrespective of the circumstances.
If I think someone’s talking bollocks, then I’ll say so, but I’ll try to avoid getting into a slanging match, or trolling, and just leave it.
None of us is perfect, and, as junky’s rightly said, those subtle nuances that convey meaning in meatspace are totally absent in cyberspace, and missing punctuation, or an emoticon, or whatever can render a cheeky aside as something that can be taken very personally. It’s happened to me where a little joke about someone’s car, which most of my friends would have just responded to with a ” you cheeky git”, was taken to heart and the person concerned was deeply offended!
It’s a flesh-and-blood person reading what’s on the screen, and offence can and will be taken, even if the comment was intended to be light-hearted.
The ‘chinky’ reference earlier on is a good point, and I may have referred to an incident where a friend asked if my then g/f and I had stopped off for a chinky when we were late getting to a wedding reception; we hadn’t actually twigged what he’d said, and his flustered attempt to wriggle out of it by then saying ‘or an Indian, or fish’n’chips or something’ made us both laugh out loud. Kim being half Chinese, you see…
We used to refer to Chinese meals as having a Chinky between ourselves, so we laughed it off, but I can see how some could be offended, although I do sometimes think it’s a case of getting offended on behalf of a particular group, ethnic or otherwise, who couldn’t actually give a toss themselves.
Social interactions nowadays are becoming a real minefield, and, as I believe Cougar has said, we are rather slow in dealing with the consequences of things that we say online.
Again, one of the things I love about STW are the many and varied subjects that come up, and the fantastic amount of love and care that contributors will give to those suffering loss or serious health issues, alongside threads like this one, and I hope that it continues for years to come. Mods like Cougar make me think that it will, so thank you, everyone. 😀

Well it varies. In your case it’s because what you say and what you mean are completely different things. I’d find that a bit scary in real life. It makes you hugely unpredictable and a little bit mad. Not a good combination.
