Stupid Rival 1x question - replacing chainring

I have a Rival 1x crankset on my Camino and want to swap from a 40t to a 38t for the Dirty Reiver next weekend.

It's the 5-arm 110bcd spider version rather than direct mount.
I got a Superstar chainring to put on it, but am not sure if it's compatible because of the "hidden bolt" thing on the SRAM chainring that is positioned where the spider arm sits behind the crank arm.

Front chainring bolts all look normal to me. All 5 are the same.

4 of the rear ones look normal, but the one behind the crank arm has no nut - it looks to be a pressed threaded insert in the chainring itself.
See the difference here. This is the back of the chainring. The one on the left sits directly behind the crank arm. The one on the right is how the other 4 look - normal chainring bolts.

I couldn't get the chainring bolts undone at this point (need some longer Allen keys) so put it all back together.

I'm just wondering if a normal chainring can be used on this crank???
If so, I'll need to source a 1x chainring bolt for the one that goes behind the crank arm. It looks like there is enough space between the back of the crank arm and front of the spider to accept a normal chainring bolt.

This is the ring I bought to put on it
https://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/raptor-chainring-110bcd-narrow-wide.htm

Also...the spider can be removed from the crank arm. This got me thinking about whether I could put a SRAM direct mount chainring on this crank, or whether it's a different spline arrangement and wouldn't work.

Ta.

I did exactly what you want to do with a Works Components 38T

99% sure it's the 6mm offset you need.

Just switching over to Direct Mount means I can go smaller in the future if I ever feel the need too.

Cheers phil5556. Sounds like I should have bought a direct mount one then, rather than the 5-arm 110bcd version.

Not sure whether to persevere with getting the one I bought to fit, or just send back and order a direct mount one.
Shouldn't have left it until the last minute 🙄

When I looked into it and asked on the Gravel FB group every answer was to just swap it for the direct mount although in theory the Superstar one should fit shouldn't it?

A proper SRAM Rival 38T does exist, although as far as I could tell only in theory as I couldn't find them for sale anywhere.

Yeah, I think the superstar one should fit - I just need to get another chainring bolt, for the one that sits behind the crank arm as currently it screws into the thread on the chainring - the Superstar one doesn't have this.

And some longer allen keys. I couldn't budge the chainring bolts and was concious of skinning all my knuckles if the tools I was using, slipped. There's a Screwfix up the road, so will pay them a visit later.

The annoying thing is when I looked into this about a week ago, I found several sites/forums saying that direct mount chainrings weren't compatible with that model of crank.
I couldn't see why as the direct mount 'spline' feature looked the same, but I just assumed there must be a subtle difference.
I'll know for next time, so I can treat myself to a nice anodised purple direct mount ring 🙂

You can press out the insert in the original chainring, I have done it before with a simple arrangement of a few spacers in a bench vice. Might be worth a try?

Thanks for the suggestion, but what would be the point of this? To then, press the insert into the Superstar chainring? I'm not sure it would work as I think the x-section of the chainring in that area is thinner than the SRAM one.
I'll only be sticking the 38T ring on for the Reiver, so am not sure I want to mess with the 40T SRAM one. Plus, with only a week to go & not much time between now & then for sorting stuff out, this has got last minute panic disaster written all over it - maybe not with others doing it, but with me anything & everything that could go wrong, will go wrong. 🙂

Just run it with 4 bolts. I’ve done many miles on a full bikepacking setup with only 4 bolts on a 5 bolt chainring (X1 Rival) Zero issues.

You can use 5 bolts, it’s just a bit of a pain accessing the one behind the crank. So I just leave it out 😁

New chainring before a huge ride? Make sure you give it a test, that's the last place you want to find out your part worn chain won't play nice!

I did consider that r8jimbob88, but it would give me the Willie's 😁

spooky_b329 - it's a new Camino that I've only put about 200km on so I think a new one would be fine 👍
Not gonna happen though because I got some 1x chainring bolts from the LBS that are too long. I queried them and they assured me they were the right ones but they are way too long 🙄

Felt like a dick questioning the workshop guy and the manager of the shop, so just took them.

I'll just be running the 40t ring, sending the chainring back and getting a refund on the bolts. If I need to change in future I'll be going direct mount 🤣

@stumpy01 you’re local to me aren’t you?

I’ve just found these if any good, couple of different lengths and some spacers I think.

I have a superstar ring on a rival spider. I think I might just have taken the spider off so I could get an allen key to the ‘hidden’ bolt and used a normal chainring bolt.

It was a fair while ago now so whatever I did appears to have been fine.

@phil5556 - I think so - just a bit north of Peterborough.

Thanks for the offer. That's very kind of you, but I think we are so close to the event that I am just going to leave things as they are.
I have kit to prepare and a few more things to do, so it's really a bit too late to be changing things around. I was hoping to get it done before last weekend, so I could try it out on a decent ride before getting into this week.

Yeah, it would have been fine had my LBS not sold me chainring bolts that were too long. I think the ones that came off the crank were fine, but it was just the 5th one. As R8jimbob88 mentioned up there, I did consider running it with just 4 bolts, but seemed a bit risky with the Reiver coming up & not worth the potential risk.

Thanks all.
