stuck bearing – inner destroyed so just the outer race

the inner came out leaving the outer race only. there is a lip on the other side so i only have 1 mm difference so a blind bearing puller wont work.  I definitely cannot grab it and extract it.

what is the best way of removing it ? i assume i am at dremel, cold chisel hacksaw time

Its an alloy frame so i can hit it hard but the alloy will be softer than the race and the tool and I could do without

Is it just a case of cut the race – hoping not to damage the frame then lever it out?

Suitably sized Rawl bolt should grip it, then thwack the bolt (assuming you have access from both sides)

Or if you have a MIG welder, tack a suitable bit of scrap to it and then use a slide hammer

I had this happen changing the bearings on a Specialized Pitch. I very carefully ground through the remaining outer race with a Dremel, the outer then just popped out.

Can you not just attach the bearing puller to the inside of the bearing race? I’m sure I’ve done that in the past.

21.32 inner 22.59 lip width so I have 1.2mm of purchase there and its 7 mm depth.

No access to a welder and not sure you could get in to weld anyway

Not sure you’re thinking about this the right way.

Put the Rawl bolt in from the side the bearing needs to come out then use a drift on the end of the Rawl bolt from the other side to hammer it out.

+1 for using the bearing puller. It will hold or it did for me at least.

Blind puller with a sharp lip will often drive the bearing out slightly as it expands (if it can get just the lip behind it), if not you can expand them in the bearing groove.

Yes if you cut the race you can relieve the pressure, PITA to do down a hole.

I use the BDS set

I’ve used a dremel for this.  A couple of cuts on opposite sides, don’t need to go all the way through (to save the frame) then a cold chisel applied in the right spot breaks one thin section and allows the other to bend, then you get it out.  Sometimes need three cuts.

Or if it’s alu, try heat.  Boiling water might do it, or a heat gun.  Don’t blowtorch it though.  Alu expands more than steel.

I mostly either use a slide hammer that has two jaws that open outward to try and get under the lip.

Or dremel a slot in the race , if you do this take your time it’s easy to slip and catch the frame.

A little heat can help boiling water is good for this

The above mentioned “dremel” thing works. Risk is high so. Risk for grinding the aluminium frame….

I used – veeery carefully – the dremel thing. You need excellent light and some vacuum to get rid of the dust. Stop and grind, stop and grind… In my case the stuck outer race suddenly came loose.

If this doesn’t happen: very, very carefully start heating the aluminium frame with a heat gun. Be carefully not to burn the paint so. Aluminium expands much more than the bearing outer race steel ring.

In the end when putting new bearings in again: use some of this evil “anti seize” stuff. Aluminiu and steel and water is a bad mixture in the long run. The anti seize stuff works great to prevent the “battery” thing.
