interesting thread. Moderation is the goal, but not always as achievable as I would like it to be !

I have been teetotal for 27 years, never liked the feeling of being drunk, can’t stand beer or lager. I would say that everything social is alcocentric, these days I don’t get questioned about why I don’t drink but used to get loads of stick for not having a pint.

I did smoke a lot of dope but gave that up 10 years ago as it was having an effect on my personality (who knew I had one)

20 units a week is a lot, OP!

I’ll drink more than that in a night, 2-3 times a week.
I don’t get hangovers, but then I probably resemble hels’ remark.
Never drink at home, or before work, but unfortunately I have a lot of spare time at the moment.
Didn’t drink at all yesterday, but I only achieved that by not leaving the house.

I tend to drink more in the winter when I am less inclined to get up early to go out on the bike. Even then I may only have a bottle of red wine on a Saturday. In the summer I am quite happy to go weeks without a drink. My problem is when I go out for a session as I do not know when to stop and then end up feeling rough the following day and tired for a couple of days after that. This happens less than 6 times a year though tbh so not a massive issue.

    20 units a week is a lot,

It’s about 8.5 pints of 4% lager, it’s not alot at all. which is less than a pint and a half every night, tbh I’m sursprised the op is seeing any benefit at all.

their health, it’s just alchohol seems to bring out the worst of the finger-wagging, nanny-knows-best types

Might be something to do with alcohol harm costing the NHS nearly £3 billion year – and some might say it’s self inflicted and thereby an unnecessary expense of taxpayers money that could be spent elsewhere.

Edit: And current WHO and UK advice now states there is no safe limit of alcohol consumption

I got sober 20 Years ago, I have never taken another drink since.
Not once has the life I left ever looked more appealing that the one I started to rebuild for myself once sober.

I have this quote on a beer mat on my desk:

    Benjamin Franklin, apparently.

Was drinking 2-3 bottles of nice beer every nigh, until a while ago, when my wife mentioned my middle-aged spread was spreading more rapidly. 😳 Cut down to 1-2 bottles, then 1 bottle, now tend not to drink at home in the week. Probably go out to a pub etc 1-3 times a week, but I’ll only have 2 or 3. Had 6 pints on Saturday at a friend’s birthday do, but nothing since.

I really enjoy drinking beer. There’s no point in stopping doing something you enjoy. You just end up miserable.

anyone else reading this thread and nervously eyeing their intake?

i consider myself a moderate drinker (compared to my early 20s), typically have 1-2 beers most nights (but not every night) and perhaps 3 pints Fri/Sat. I never get drunk, and stop well before hangover territory. But that’s still 25-30 units! Should I be worried? Compared to my early 20’s this is practically teetotal…

I usually stop for January, find it irritating rather than difficult, and don’t notice any health changes.

(What I DO find hard to give up, but notice health benefits when I do, is caffeine…)

Also, just to add – fair play to those who recognised an issue and took steps to get on top of it. I’ve seen some friends fall foul of the drink, and it’s not funny. So well played chaps 🙂

I have the same, 1 is too many, 8 is never enough problem that was mentioned above.

I will either drink nothing, or as much as I can. I’m not sure how much of a problem that is.

I enjoy drinking, but if its not a suitable day for it then I won’t have any, like if work is busy, no drinking on school nights, if I plan to go running early Saturday then I’ll skip drinking Friday. This is my happy medium I guess, from drinking all the time previously.

I would also say that 20 units is about what I would have in one afternoon + evening long session, but I wouldn’t call it a lot in weekly consumption terms
