Sliding Gates

Parents are looking to put some gates on the back of their driveway. Due to the position of where the cars are parked, normal gates are not going to work , as there is no room for the gates to open inward. They can’t open outwards either.
They do have room for a sliding gate to fully open, so that’s the plan. They also want it automated ( it would be awkward to park up and manually close it)
Has anyone had one installed lately ? Just want an idea of cost before I start getting people in to price one up.
Ideally want a cantilever type rather than a track in the floor. Opening is approx 5 metres.

a 5m cantilevered gate that slides sounds like an engineering nightmare. I’m sure its doable, but I suspect it’ll be really expensive.

How about a portcullis?

Moat and drawbridge? Koi in the moat etc

Suggests the overall gate length needs to be 7.5m to support a 5m opening, so width of garden needs to be 12.5m minimum and foundations of 0.5m depth to support it. Not your average weekend DIY project!

Trackm in the floor would be my suggestion – easier to install and likely less materials and thinking to get it implemented.

What’s the purpose of the gate? If it’s to keep cars on the drive from being taken then some uppy downy bollards would do a similar job, they can be remote/app controlled too so tick the automation box. If they really want a gate to stop people seeing in then a vertical pivot might do the job – as long as they don’t have power/phone cables over the drive

Damn it.

We design them for Network Rail access points – massive foundations! Okay it was a 6.0m wide opening. The foundation was 4.0m long x 0.8m deep x 1.5m wide. You don’t want any significant deflection or they won’t slide properly.

Mine run on a track across the gateway with an electric motor to open and close. No need for cantilever and all that jazz. Fitted by me over ten years ago so no idea on prices now. I think I bought the whole kit from ebay

What’s the purpose of the gate?

Bit of everything really.
1. To stop the dog from running off
2. To stop neighbour’s dogs from running in
3. Stop people walking up the back lane and through the back garden

Had someone round this afternoon and it’s £6.5k + VAT.
Could get a small bathroom redone for that 😉
