Looking to get a short stem for my soul, was thinking a nice short 50mm. Looking at a Thomson one, are they worth the price? Are there any other options I should be looking at?

    Funn Funnduro stem.
45mm or 60mm, light, good value at 32 quid, different colours.

I have a 40mm Spank one that looks delicate and unobtrusive, a heavy duty 50mm Hussefelt item and a 35mm Nukeproof one that is a halfway house in terms of build…not too big, not too small if that makes sense.

Struggle to get excited by them TBH, they were bought to give me slight variations in reach and are purely functional, I don’t consider them ‘bling’ and as such they were bought in various online sales when prices were right.

Another vote for the Funn Funnduro Stem here.

Strong, looks great and very light

    Easton Haven.

Look lovely and have a nice system on the face plate bolts where you do the top two all the way up and tighten the bottom two as necessary rather than having to worry about maintaining the same gap top and bottom.

I’ve got a Pro FRS on one bike and a cheap KCNC on the other. Light and strong, decent looking, just as stiff as my Hope and Easton were. Tons of good stems out there, not hard to do, what needs real skill is charging £60 for a mediocre one 😉

I’ve only used a few but the one I’ve settled on is a Syntace megaforce. Super stiff.

+2 for the Funnduro, nicely made.

I’ve also got a couple of these:

    Really nice for the money.

PSA anyone looking for a 1.5″ steerer stem CRC are selling the Easton Havoc (beast of a stem) for £15. Bargaintastic.

    Funnduro here too.

Makes the posh brands look like a joke.

Another Funnduro user here. An outstandingly nice piece of kit for what you’re paying. Makes you wonder how the other brands justify double the price

    Ooh, do like that answer.

FWIW, Raceface blamed a funnduro stem for cracking my mate’s carbon bars. Whether that was actually the case, I couldn’t comment.

Renthal Duo 50mm stem on my bike. Strong, light and unobtrusive but it’s also a stem so I don’t get too excited about them.

Funnduros used to be £21 for a while on CRC. Even at the current £31 they are fantastic value. Also good for long travel / big wheels when you want to keep the front end down as they have a short stack height at 30mm.

I have a £15, eight year old stem that has been used on my old minidh, my all mountain/trail/menduro/next years buzzword bike and is currently on my chunky hardtail. It looks cheap but it’s never let me down. Go for the one that you like the look of but don’t expect better performance for your money.

I dunno, there might not be much difference between a £30 stem and a £60 stem, but I’ve had some shocking ones over the years, topping that list was a Specialized endure OEM stem, 70mm yet had the stiffness properties of overcooked spaghetti.

Can’t recommend the On-One hot-box, they eventually blamed mine for why the headset wouldn’t stay tight on my Fatty. Replacement seems OK but I’m shopping around for something nicer though. Might have to be purple after getting some cheap Hope QR’s!

I am surprised no one mentioned the Funn Funnduro yet 😆

Great stem for the money. Very well made.

Can I make some shameless self promotion of my WTD thread for a 35mm stem to play around with position on my new bike before I commit to buying something a bit nicer.

Thanks for the advise guys, think I will give the Funnduro a crack and see how it treats me.
