Shimano winter boots

Got a birthday coming up and thinking of treating myself to some winter boots.

The MW5 (Mw501) get a good review, but the ‘speed laces’ look naff to me

The MW701 have Boa fastening, but are a big chunk of money.

Always used them. Very happy with them. Good fit and feel. Use them for about 1/2 the year.

Not had the new BOA version yet but got it on my lake boots which only come out in terrible weather.

On reflection, I’m torn on the laces as they may prove more reliable in the long run, and the flap should keep most of the mud off.

1) I love my shimano boots (older version) but they are wet weather boot not winter boot. If you mtb off-road then lakes MXZ< Bontrager OWM, 45nrth japanther or the like are where you should be looking.

2) Zip’s should not be anywhere near mud!

Older MW7’s here – on third year of use, and use them most of the Summer anyway due to it being wet.

Great in wet and winter – don’t forget Winter use can vary be individual – one pair of gloves might be fine on one person, but too cold on another.

I find them plenty warm enough, but if you suffer cold feet/hands, you may want a lined pair.

According to the information both of the above have fleece lining, so hope they will be reasonably warm

Used MW5’s last winter.
The speed laces were fine. The flap keeps the crap off them.
I’m either a 46 or 47 in shimano shoes. I got 47’s and they run quite big, so space for a pair of winter hiking socks. Kept me with toasty feet all through the Festive 500 and the Strathpuffer.

Having read this thread and then watched yesterdays downpour i ordered some shoes i probably dont need (and frankly i probably should have spent the money fixing my brakes and broken spokes), the MW701 (new ones), from Tweeks. Very nice they are too (i sahll also be hiding them from the missus). Anyway , when it comes to fitting cleats, i’ve pretty much bodged my way through it for the last 20 years, i cant say they’ve ever been perfect, so how do you lot do it – do you do what BC says and start marking up big and small metatarcels and draw lines and what not, or just guess it?

Got some of the MW701’s after I returned my Northwave Raptors due to the neoprene collar coming away. Had a pair of older shimano boots and they have lasted years but really more of a wet weather boot. Got the new MW701’s with Boa. Not ridden with them yet as its not been cold enough. I reckon they will good for winter. Toe box is nice and wide, loads of wiggle room. Seem really well put together and boa straps them up nice and even.

Lake 303’s here, they’ve seen Jan 2013, this will be their last winter as they are beginning to fall apart, had to replace the BOA once in that time and its was covered under Boa lifetime warranty.  They get heavily used in horrendous Sussex slop.  I might have got a few more years out of them if I’d cleaned and treated them a bit more.

im on the hunt for some new winter boots also, my arctic gtx boots have split and are about 7 years old, will keep as a emergency back up

anyone found any good prices on the shimano mw701’s? I would say that these are the ones id like this time around

I usually just put my cleats as far back as they go and then adjust for angle if I feel I’m bumping into the end of the float. Works for me.
