    Hi

Took my bike to my local shop as my clutch was slightly squeaking upon compression, but just back from its first ride and now it’s 10 times worse. Gears shifted perfect before but now make a loud creak when I go in to the top ring on the cassette. I thought it might have been the b tension screw that needed adjusting but looking closely the cassette doesn’t touch the derailleur cogs.

I attempted to take the cover off for a look myself and it was leaking oil everywhere, is this normal? I thought it should only have grease on the clutch mechanism not oil pouring out?

Is this something that’s fixable or would you say it’s knackered? Two Videos below with sound

Yeah no oil required. There are a few service videos on YouTube, I didn’t use the specific grease and its OK but will pick some up as I have several on the go..

Try moving the derailleur cage by hand it should feel stiff but smooth through its travel. If it feels jerky or rough something definitely not right. Does flicking the lever actually turn the clutch off? It’s possible to assemble the cam the wrong way round which can cause it to jam up I believe.

The service uses such a small amount of grease there should be nothing coming out.

Thanks. Just went back to the shop and they’re holding no responsibility saying it was already on its way out. Questioned them about the oil and they said they had to pack it full of oil because it was so dry. But shouldn’t it have been grease.

I probably do need a new one to be fair but now I’m left with a bill for them to have broken something that was rideable.

As has been said .. there’s loads of videos on YouTube. Very easy to disassemble. Doesn’t need to be packed with oil .. just a tiny bit of grease. Not sure what your bike shop are doing. You can do it all yourself with a 2mm Allen key (I think).

Go to the official Shimano cycling website and find the dealer manual for your rear mech & follow the instructions 👍

They have admitted to filling the clutch with oil?

You’re right, you do need a new one. Bike shop that is. They’re just clueless Muppets.

Sounds like the shop didn’t know how to strip the mech so just took the cover off and threw some oil at it.
Take the cage off the main body and grease the pivot then re assemble.
Good video here on how to strip/rebuild it.
Ignore the fitting a different cage and just refit yours.

There’s a bit you should grease and a bit you shouldn’t so filling it with oil is a no no, avoid that shop, total clowns.
When I had a slight squeek it was the pivots of the mech not the clutch mechanism, a blast of silicone spray fixed my issue.

Thanks all, will see if I can source some proper grease and attempt to follow the YT vids.

Yeah they openly admitted packing it full of oil, their reason being because of my supposed lack of maintenance it needed oil to get it moving again.

Feel at a loss having paid now for it to come back in a worse condition 😢

It’s the pivot, not the clutch. Relatively simple to strip down, clean and regrease, just be conscious of the correct direction the cage rotates when you’re putting it back together.

At least you know which shop to steer clear of now.

One of the nicest guides to clutch and pivot is here:

also if you want to check how the clutch should move, my quick vid here:
