Own car used for business as I opted out.. Mondeo TDCi 130 brake LX 54 plate, 120,000 miles in, running sweet, but needs rear sub frame bushes (450.00) and a clutch soon (slips at 4000rpm when giving it the beans but OK otherwise)

All paid off in a couple of months, just received a cheque off the nice tax man for tax relief on business mileage (1100.00) so I could afford to put the sub frame and clutch right but….

I can keep it until September 2010 (then it is considered too old by the company)! and it we could save the car allowance up at about 270.00 a month (take home).

so, spend a grand on it now and it should make 3 grand back leaving me 2 grand up
    or
sell it for a grand (perhaps) and I still have the tax mans grand too?

Sounds like your garage might be taking you for a ride for the bushes:

You sure its just the clutch and not the DMF? That would be a decision maker!

DMF has a reputation for faily. I think symptoms of dud DMF is difficulties starting car, something to do with the starter not engaging on the DMF properly?

Top Tip – Don’t start the car with the clutch pressed down, this makes it more likely to fail early. Select neutral and start engine with clutch up. Same with Transits as they also have DMF probs. Also heard something about a squeaky clutch pedal being an early symtom which is worrying as my 130TDCi does that. Will be out there later with some copper grease to try and prove otherwise later 🙂

    cars are worth nothing now..

Sayin that if your trading it in then Id do so now before you hav spent close on a grand.

I doubt very much you wil see that £1000 fixing the clutch and subframe bushes back when you trade in/sell later.

Get rid now while you have an excuse to sell it cheap and buy something else now while the second hand market is on its knees price wise.

Clutch parts are £120 +vat, so 350 comfortable should sort that. Sub frame bushes again much less than 450. I guess you’ve been quoted for a new subframe where as now most people can just fit new bushes into the frame. takes the car off the road for a day or two while they cure though. More like 150n for this i’d have thought.

£500 quid now and keep running it. If it does need a DMF at some point this is about £500 from the quote i got yesterday from my local independent.

Fixed up I rekcon it’d be worth £3k tops as it is more like £2k.

I had Powerflex bushes fitted to mine a few months ago – got the bushes myself direct from Powerflex, local garage fitted them for about £60. They don’t glue in like the Ford ones, so the car doesn’t have to be off the road while they cure. Total cost about £130ish IIRC. Don’t know anything about the clutch, but the prices you quote for repairs seem to be Ford main dealer, you can get as good a job (at least!) for much less. Worth keeping on the road if that’s all it needs, not sure about the whole DMF thing though.

“E.G VAUXHALS you can pick up a brand new vectra now for under 10 grand, list on these was near 18 last year” – not a valid point with that example, who ever paid list for anything anyway?

Why would anyone buy a Vauxhall? At least you have some sort of steering feel/road feedback than the over-assisted (numb) electric steering of Vauxhalls 🙄

Coolhandluke, I’d take into three Specialist garages for quotes then decide what to do.
