Sanderson Town Crier; any opinions?

I’ve currently got a BFe set up single speed, and a cx bike. I’m considering selling both and getting a light-ish xc / trail 29er hard tail.

I’d love a Stanton Sherpa but can’t afford a new one, and am keeping a lookout for used. I’ve spotted the Sanderson frames seem to be good value, does anyone have any experience of them, and the town crier in particular?

What size Sherpa do you need?

Sanderson Town Crier is more of an XC mile muncher kind of bike. Not ridden one, but I know Tony from Sanderson and know that’s what he wanted it to be when it was designed. The Sherpa is a more agressive trail bike for sure.

There was one on display at the bicycle smithy in Hazel Grove a couple of years ago. Seemed well made and the store owner was a big fan. This is utterly shallow, but I was put off by the ridiculous name and graphics / paint scheme designed by somebodies grandad. Ended up with a Trans am instead.

If you’re anywhere nearby it would be worth calling in or ringing. The guy that runs the shop stocks Sanderson, Is very knowledgeable and seems like a thoroughly nice chap.

Thanks for the info. Mboy, I’m after a 17″ sherpa. I realise the Sanderson is a bit more xc, but saying that the geo seems reasonable for a trail bike.

My older Sanderson Breath is well made, great paint job, and a really sprightly, springy (natch) ride. Noticeably better than my old Clockwork, C16r and any other steel frame I’ve ridden.

The Town Crier is post the new strength testing I believe, I imagine that will have made a difference to ride.

My dad was a town crier too (Ilkley).

I’ve recently brought a town crier,currently half way through the build,so far I’m very pleased with the frame, it’s nicely made and the finish on it is excellent, the dark blue looks much better in the flesh.

There are 19″ and 17″ TCs on the fleabay at the minute.

In the case of my FiL, by being very loud. In order to differentiate between grandparents, my kids called them “loud granddad” or “quiet granddad!

What’s happening with Sanderson? Thought they always made underrated frames and don’t seem to have introduced anything new for a few years at least.

A mate has one in the 650b format, and loves it. Hammer’s around the Peak happily enough on a 120mm fork, running wide bars and short stem. He seems to rate it, and in terms of handling I didn’t notice it feeling any less capable than my Soul.

What about the Onza Payoff frame is £375 new and has good reviews.

I was going to buy a Blitz. Lovely looking in the flesh

I remember seeing the 26″ Breath and Blitz frames in a shop and they looked first rate.

The Onza is now advertised for £315 on facebook

I had a breath too, lovely bike and only sold it once I went over to big wheels.

If my cooker goes the town crier will be option I’d seriously consider in the blue.

I thought the town crier was named after a beer? Not sure where I heard that, possibly may have just made that up….

^ Hobson’s Town Crier was one of my regular local staple back in the day. Excellent ale, but no idea if linked to the bike.

I’ve had a Town Crier for just over 12 months now and it’s amazing. Got it as a custom build from Bicycle Smithy in Hazel Grove and it’s just blown me away. Jon at the shop really knows his stuff and rides one himself! My previous bike was a steel Kona Explosif that I’d had for 13 years and the Town Crier just surpasses it in every way. Light (for steel), fast, comfortable and inspires confidence. I took it back to the shop for another potential customer to have a look at, he took it for a spin and ordered one on the spot! Don’t know how to upload pictures on here but I posted it on Bike Radar last year.
