Routes Around Herefordshire

Afternoon all,

Recently moved down into Herefordshire and been looking for somewhere to get out riding regularly.

Been over to Cannop Ponds a fair few times and enjoyed it a lot, although it’s just over an hours drive!  Is there anywhere else local (~hour or under) that people would recommend to go and have a look at? Looking for blue/red style of XC trail.

Hopton Woods is about the only place with marked trails in Herefordshire. There’s loads of cheeky bits all over, but you would need local knowledge to find it. Unfortunately I’m not local, or more to the point even after 28 years I’m “not local”. I only know little bits in a few areas.

Haugh Woods, West Woods, Credenhill, some bits Ledbury way.

TBH I ride the FOD, mainly because I work there, after work or I meet up with some of the lads from work.

For something you cannot do often, try parts of the River Teme, it has dried up completely in sections this week due to the heatwave!

Yep haugh woods is a decent place to ride. Theres a lot of trails there but you will need a local guide to show you them otherwise you’ll end up riding fireroads as they’re well hidden.

Also have a explore around Ross (Penyard and Chase HIll) – lots of tracks up there. Most are shown on Strava.

When I lived in North Herefordshire I’d ride up to Mortimer Forest/Bringewood.  But it’s not a trail center, so you’ll need to explore.

I live in hereford. Nothing is ridable or worth riding from the doorstep. As mentioned, Haugh, FOD, Hopton, Long Myndd, Brecon Beacons, Rhayader, Black Mountains and Cwmcarn are all within an hours drive.

Am reasonably new to Hereford too.

I’m local too amd agree with all of the above.

The Ross trails are great, definitely worth a look and depending on where in Hereford you live can be 25 minutes away.

There’s also a Herefordshire mountain bikes FB page that’s welcoming.

They’re aren’t any trails above Ross whatever Strava says 🙂 Again, a local would help as while most are marked, some new ones have been built on the other side of the hill which would be easier with a bit of guiding.

There are the Malverns of course. Again, most of the ‘good’ trails are not strictly legal and it gets silly busy at the weekends but there is lots of really good, steep riding especially on the other (Worcester) side.

My ‘local’ trails are in Dymock woods and there’s more there than first appears (massive clover leaf wood) but you need to hunt for it and it’s not as challenging as the FoD/Haugh/etc. It’s also horrible when it’s wet but that’s most of the trails around here!

Haugh Woods is great. Loads of trails but it helps to have someone show you how to link it all up. Best way is to ask on the Facebook page.

I’m in Ludlow, and it’s about a 5 minute ride from door to Mortimer/ Bringewood forest. This  is excellent by any standard. Full on national DH tracks to sublime Singletrack. Defo need local guidance though. Happy to show you around 🙂
