Finbar – they used to ride with a beef steak in their shorts not the complex pads we have today. Would you want to go back to that? Just because things were done one way in the past doesn’t always mean it was better than things are today. And just so you know – I am the sort of grouch who thinks things were “better” in the past generally. Oh and by the way I started riding seriously mid 80’s and my bars were 44 wide then, I prefer 46 now that these are occasionally available. I think the idea was that narrow was aero so worth going for. I used to ride 18mm tyres too as that seemed to be the done thing. This was before people realised that comfort (wider bars, bigger tyres) could actually make you “quicker” over a race distance and that there were also performance advantages ( wider bars could allow the chest to open more improving breathing, bigger tyres roll better as they have more subtle carcasses that adapt to a surface rather than being deflected and losing energy).
And to be fair as I don’t, and never have raced, I realise setting up my big to be comfortable is far more important than having the very latest racing format, whatever that might be.
