Been looking at these to replace my Orange 5 29er and really like what I see and hear about the Ripmo Af’s, but not sure the benefit of either the air shock or coil shock, any owners like to say what they went for and why?

I’m mainly riding in Devon hills and Bike Park Wales type places, late 50’s about 85kgs all up with riding gear, and not the greatest climber at all, but love to downs 🙂

If you go coil make sure you go with the dvo one they suggest – the yoke thing that drives the shock will probably mangle something like a DHX2 as it only has a 9mm shaft (vs 14mm for the dvo).

Personally on that bike I’d go coil – I’m busting to get one for my sentinel (the Ripmo was the other remain option for a longer travel bike for me) – on my last bike the coil vs the air shock was a game changer. Just more grip everywhere really. Other than a bit more weight I didn’t see any downside to coil.

Go coil far superior and its not as if the weight penalty is much in a AF frame

Not used mine with air, but all previous bikes have been air. Mine has dvo jade X coil and it’s certainly plush and grippy. Sensitivity is superb and very easy to setup. After changing spring 3 times, I’ve now got the cascade link which makes it more progressive. That was a very big improvement. Don’t think I’ve bottomed out out since fitting.

Cheers guys, went to look at a bike this afternoon and it turned out he had both shocks, so brought the bike with both shocks, so I can try them both out, just need to work out correct spring, as the chap was about 2 stone lighter than me.

I’ve got the Topaz, and it’s a bloody good air shock. Feels comparable to my old X2. I don’t regret the choice.
Sounds like you’ve struck gold by getting both though!

DVO Topaz is what now works on them really well, have a ripmo v2 carbon with a current gen X2 with the VVT and its amazing. But its basically a £1k for a shock, which will meet its end on a rock or when fox can’t get an o ring for it in 2 years time rendering it scrap lol.

DVO topaz or some kind of coil, RS?
