Riders who prefer riding hardtails? Gnar? I think not!

“Why do the poors on their HTs feel the need to justify their decision?”
Very snobby, classist attitude – yuk. I’d own expensive bikes, but I can’t justify the very marginal benefit when there are more important demands on my wallet. And it overlooks the folks riding expensive custom HT frames.
cookeaaFull MemberI’ve never met a Passat Driver with BMW envy, interesting idea though…
Normally it’s the otherway they feel the need to justify having spanked and extrat 2K for a VW badge and uncomfortable seats, when the equivalent Skoda or Seat would have done just as well, more like Rigid, SS, Air9 riders who know they’d be better off with gears and a 4″ fork really, but like the looks of it without…FS Evangelists are more often like Audi Drivers, they can only go fast in a straight line and can’t take a corner, and will carve you up given half a chance. The 4WD/ 6″ tallent compensation is all about “optimal grip and traction” apparently that and they like to keep their machine super clean…

Are you having a laugh?
beanieripperFree MemberI couldn’t even count the number of people i shoot past on my chameleon riding full suss at trail centres. Unless your doing full on downhill or freeride they are for g@ys only..
jonramboFree MemberOk, thanks guys for the interesting replys, its good to see so many of u with lots of confidence! Sounds like u guys know how to ride hardtails properly! Is there more skill involved?! Nah! I don’t think so, it just makes it a bit harsher, surely u can appreciate that in the long run hardtail frames crack, because of the stress there under, its just common sense really, so a full suss is more fun and in the long run, costs less, someone mentioned spds or flats, i certainly think theres more skill involved with flats but then thats my opinion, anyway, does it matter? Nah, we’re all lovers of two wheels, lets celebrate these good times!! 😆

Vag group engineering is way ahead or Porche in the “can we stick the engine somewhere really silly” stakes. I mean in front of the front axel, not in line with, or behind.
Someone once told me their new golf GTI handled just like a go-kart, I asked him where he’d driven a 2 ton front engined, front wheel drive go cart, he took the point.

I used to ride a lot of dh on both hardtail and full bounce and you can learn a lot from both types. Most people I see on full bouncers have it for comfort but also because they’re lazy riders and use the suspension as an excuse to avoid picking out riding lines. Using a hardtail made me to choose the smoothest lines, pop off roots and stones etc and I think made me a better rider. Your statement about stresses on frames can happen to any bike but it comes down to the way it’s ridden
racefaceec90Full Memberpersonally i love both ht and full sus.at the moment have an anthem x2 which i have nothing but praise for (it has definitely helped me out when it could have chucked me off) would love to get a ht at some point also though (something rigid forked, steel, with gears and discs 😀 would run it over winter.
BurtsFree MemberIf only I could ride my full-suss like this guy rides a hardtail…
Its not about the bike.
mountainman123Free MemberNot even going to answer such a stupid topic questions.
I did the world cup downhill course in Fort William in 7mins 54 seconds on my hard hitting hardtail, so that slams every single stupid reason you think people have a hardtail.
TAFF nice reply and cock on mate.skiboyFree Memberbeen following this for a few days and it has become apparent Jon,you are a total muppet as the others have pointed out,
i ride hardtails because i like being involved, my full susser is never out the shed unless its snowing then i take it because it’s IMO my worst bike and deserves the salt,
my last hardatil cost me 4k to build,
I didn’t go hardtail because i couldn’t afford a bouncer, i have 8k of hardtails all built by myself from the ground up (not exactly difficult as it’s only a bike so i’m not bragging)
Lots of my mates prefer full bouncers and you know what, that’s fine, if that’s what they like to ride then great,
we all ride together, have loads of fun and do the same stuff, just last week we had a bit of a race to the bottom of the brickhill woods down christina, i couldn’t get close to one of the guys on his bouncer as he was just too quick for me but i had another with a helmet cam just behind me most of the way down, but he just didn’t have enough pace to pass, now we got to the bottom in this order, bouncer-hardtail-bouncer-hardtail-bouncer,
and you know what else , we didn’t sit round spouting which was best and which was quickest once we got to the bottom, we just all had a laugh at our antics and made a date for our next meet in a week,
conclusion is,
some people just like to talk the talk like yourself,us others, mainly the stw massive and the real bike riders of the world , just do it, regardless of ability, funds, likes ,dislikes, styles, kit etc.
so shut your spouting trap and get on with it,
jonramboFree MemberSeems to be a very interesting topic, thanks guys! You’ve proved my point mountainman That’s quite a slow time that if u had a full sus then u could have done it quicker and more importantly had lots more fun!! This is the point im trying to make, a lot of people ride hardtails because they think they have a point to make, fair enough, i totally understand that some people won’t be able to afford a full suss, especially through these hard times, but all of u who think your so rad on a hardtail why not be even more gnar an go full rigid? At the end of the day these modern hardcore hardtails are set up very slack, geometry is more important than suspension! Anyway thanks once again for the interesting replies, its good that we all have different views on the subject. 🙂
yunkiFree MemberI’m gonna wade in with my twopenceworth here.. as you probably didn’t take my earlier post seriously.. which will have been a mistake on your part I assure you..
I beg you for your own safety to make sure that you put a condom on before you go riding in future.. just in case I happen to be using the same trails..I can ride my hardtail just about as fast as I am able.. if I was on a full sus and going even faster there is no way that my brain could keep up with the sheer warp factor like speeds that I achieve.. already the speed at which I have to make cornering decisions in technical rock sections is at the very limit of human ability.. unless I was brundlefly a full sus would be wasted on me..
It’s like this.. if you ride a full sus.. you are obviously a very slow and unaccomplished rider..
buzz-lightyearFree MemberLots of folks on here do ride rigid MTB, even carbon, 29ers, and with one gear; because the terrain suits and they are good/hard enough to enjoy it (tips hat).
Personally, I like to keep my eyeballs in, and a suspension fork helps with that. Rear suspension is more of a take-it-or-leave-it option for a lot of trail riding. So “ner!”
skiboyFree Memberstill missing the point then,
people ride whatever they like, end of thread
you fail in an epic way i’m afraid, were you dropped on your head as a child ?
maybe more than once??
beanieripperFree MemberAccording to my last Viewranger track log, my max speed was 544mph (on a hardtail) If i was to go full suss I would break the soundbarrier, I don’t think regular sonic booms would go down too well in the quiet place I live. Jon, your clearly a bit touched, but don’t worry, go ride that apollo fs you’ve got to the maxxxxxxxx
yunkiFree MemberAccording to my last Viewranger track log, my max speed was 544mph (on a hardtail) If i was to go full suss I would break the soundbarrier,
+1 (you must ride the same bike as me)
I am also worried for the safety of other trail users and the possibility of ripping a hole in the time space continuum.. thus rendering the whole universe susceptable to a plague of creatures from the dungeon dimensions..
MrKmkIIFree Memberi ride a singlespeed fixed gear unicycle with a head angle of 73 degrees and i’m still quicker that jon rambo being chased by a bear
PeterPoddyFree MemberjThat’s quite a slow time that if u had a full sus then u could have done it quicker and more importantly had lots more fun!! OK, my turn to bite: What a load of balls. Seriously. The type of bike you ride has bugger all to do with the amount of fun you have. That’s more to do with your frame of mind than anything else, or possibly the circumstances of the ride. If you need a FS bike to have more fun, then you’re one seriously sad halfwit.
I’ve got 3 very different bikes: a Pitch, a carbon 456 and a 1992 Kona Singlespeed. If I take the Wrong bike on the wrong ride it’s no fun. XC on a Pitch? No thanks. Alps on a rigid Kona? No thanks.
And I can afford whatever I like, but I choose to build my bikes on a strict budget. Why? Because it’s FUN buying and selling and getting good VFM……Sounds like someones been reading MBR and believing the hype.
randomjeremyFree Member7 minutes 54 down FW is an awful time, are you a blind paraplegic? Either that or a wonderful troll.
mountainman123Free MemberWe are talking about the black run here not the poxy red downhill run.
I changed from a FS to a HT because i was bored with FS you can plough over/into anything with a FS were you have to pick lines more with the HT, FSs are for people that aint very good at mountain biking because they need as much help as possible 😀
I take my HT to Morzine and Les Gets and have loads of fun and yes i do overtake people on FSs, i dont think its owt much top do with the bike its what balls you have!!!randomjeremyFree MemberYeah still a dreadful time but hey ho. You must have rad gnar skills to the power of sick if a FS makes things too easy for you, why don’t you go pro?
mountainman123Free MemberIf its an awefull time why would i go pro!! you halfwit.
Im no were near good enough to go pro, some of them nutter free riders and downhillers have a on/off button to there brain.randomjeremyFree MemberI suppose I could point out that all the pros ride FS bikes, and by your logic that makes them poor riders. I’m not going to though; it’s clear from your basic level of comprehension that you’re not very bright, and if I carry on trolling you I will end up feeling like a bully, which isn’t cool.
DezBFree MemberSeems to be a very interesting topic
Now, thats where i disagree
mountainman123Free MemberRANDOMJEREMY there is enough people who has already told you how stupid you are so i wont bother, ALL pros ride full sus!? Funny looking FS that Danny Mcaskill rides! and so on and on and on, id say it was you that aint too bright!
scotsmanFree MemberSo the consesus is that I should ditch the 9″ of travel on the arse end of my behemoth DH rig and remove the complete waste of time CCDB and weld in a solid bar as I will be faster on some Cotrag SS HT?
Come to think of it I should do the same to the KTM 450 EXC as I clearly wont need it for a round of the Scottish Enduro Championship. Pah suspension is for fannies!
WHAT A LOAD OF F*****G DRIVEL some people talk!
Who gives a toss, people ride MTB’s for very different reasons, some may not need a FS as they are not very fast or they don’t want to grow a beard 😉 but they want FS as they think it will boost what little confidence they have, me I like speed drops and jumps but I used to race moto cross so HT is not for me, infact pedalling up hill is not for me! Each to there own.O and all you HT boys that pass full sussers at the trail centres you are all my heros! Wish I could ride a HT as fast as you boys. 😉
beanieripperFree Memberscotsman, you will never ride a hardtail as fast as me…it is just one of those things in life..accept it and move on… (i never get sarcasm to work on tinterweb)
martymacFull Memberthis is quality, its muuuuch better than casualty.
roadbikes ftw!AndyhiltonFree MemberI think it’s nice that mountainman and rambo are sharing a brain cell. Get back under the bridge boys. I’m off out for a ride. HT today I think.
rOcKeTdOgFull MemberDoes trolling (it is trolling?, don’t tell me they actually believe what they’ve written) have to go hand in hand with bad spelling and punctuation?
jonramboFree MemberWell thanks for the interesting feedback guys, seems people have different views, seems like a lot of good riders on here! Each to there own i say! Just interesting to see diff opinions, rocketdog, u gotta get rid of that beard?!! 😆
trailmonkeyFull Memberwent out on my HT today for the first time in ages.
6 hours of my life that i’ll never get back.
