I am planning on getting back into some epic adventures (non trail centre) on the MTB – you know those kind of Peaks/Lakes/Welsh/Scottish 30+ milers with a bit of hike a bike and a lot of rocky bridleways and epic views.

Problem is, I don’t really know many people who ride this kind of riding now. Of course I could just go out and explore, which I do regularly on my own, map reading etc, but there is always that lack of flow when you are riding a route for the first time with nothing more than a map and some scribbles for guidance.

Any recommendations for a good guide/guides welcome. Am prepared to travel for a good day out 🙂

epic adventures (non trail centre) on the MTB – you know those kind of Peaks/Lakes/Welsh/Scottish 30+ milers with a bit of hike a bike and a lot of rocky bridleways footpaths and epic views.

That’s pretty much what we do every weekend.
Doesn’t answer your question directly, but as an alternative worth considering maybe… Look up Bogtrotters on t’interweb.
Sunday rides are typically a big mountain day out in the Lakes/Peak/Wales.
eg This weekend we’re doing Snowdon (twice, both Rhyd Ddu & Rangers).
Last weekend was Helvellyn, the weekend before that was Golfie/Innerleithen.

Sublime rides for Lake District – http://www.sublimerides.co.uk/%5B/url%5D

Polly from Mountain Yoga Breaks for Mid-South Wales – http://www.mountainyogabreaks.co.uk/%5B/url%5D

Scotland – Try Huw at GoWhereScotland – http://go-where.co.uk/%5B/url%5D

Not sure about the Peaks – I only live in Nottingham and regularly ride the Peaks but can’t think of a guide. If you are looking at Yorkshire, I’d try Wayne at EDS Bikes

Hope this helps,

These routes seem to be highly rated by other people, and the ones I’ve ridden (Cadair Berwyn, Llyn Cowlyd) were pretty much what you describe: Edge Cycleworks NW routes

Same goes for these (I’ve done Grwyne Fawr, Pontsticill Crossover, Gap) : Brecon Beacons MTB routes

C’mon, it’s not an epic if you don’t have at least one unnecessary detour into a bottomless highland bog. When exactly would you be planning said adventures? I’m sure I could rustle up a couple of local worthies for a ride out somewhere….

30 plus miles is epic?

(Rewrites tomorrow’s ride as ‘epic’)

I do, got a plan 😯 for tomorrow but unlikely to include any “flow”
It will include hike’a bike, bogs, getting lost, will take Xhrs to ride……..
Lots if people think I’m nuts for where I go 🙄
Strangely though some have started to ride some of the suff I’ve been doing for ages and think they have found something new 💡

A vote here for Rob at Wildrides, especially if you fancy something in the Brecon Beacons/Black Mountains. The type of trip he runs sounds exactly what you are looking for.

30-40 miles 5000+ft of climbing on Exmoor take your fancy?

Huw at Go-where is another recommendation from me. Not done his trips but have ridden with him for years and he knows aaaaaaaall the good stuff in Scotland.
