some beautiful suggestions so far, as above i was hugely impressed by will smith in seven pounds and the pursuit of happines.

some suggestions i haven’t noticed come up yet:

‘finding neverland’ (its the bit on the park bench at the end)
marley and me (its the bit where marley puts his head on jennifer whatherface’s lap after seeing the doctor)
    pretty much any pixar film
the notebook (i know its a romance… but if you love anybody as much as ryan goslings character then its pretty intense)

Two Lane Blacktop is ace, it’s even got Harry Dean Stanton in it and everyone knows that he’s the best actor ever.

Which leads me nicely on to my rec

    Come & See.

no sound on the trailer – but it’s a russian take on german occupation
of belarussia (spelling?) during WW2. Genuinely frightening.

the green mile is pretty good, even if it is written by Stephen king ans has tom Hanks in it.

The Green Mile’s a proper mission though!

    A Beautiful Mind

Definitely agree with Up, I shed a (tiny) manly tear at the montage in the beginning. Dead Man’s Shoes as well, awesome.

    Why not?

He is a good writer (Shawshank, Misery, It) and Tom Hanks is a good actor (Philadelphia, Forest Gump, Big).

They are the only 2 films to make me cry since reaching adulthood.

It was more the music – when ‘Song to the Siren’ kicked in. Then again Phil, you haven’t got kids, so probably a bit different. I didn’t really consider that film “entertainment” personally 🙁

+1 for Fight Club and that quote from it 🙂

Man on Wire was quite inspirational for me. Not that I’ll be tightrope walking between buildings any time soon.

    Another +1 for It’s a Wonderful Life.

The Killing Fields is one of the most moving films I’ve ever seen though.

Another vote for dead man’s shoes, lives of others and senna.

TT: closer to the edge is another excellent documentary from this year, and you don’t have to be remotely interested in the TT to enjoy it.

I’d also recommend a French film called tell no one

    Into the wild

The only thing this film moved me to do was to switch it off. I wanted the annoying spoilt little brat to die from the start.

seven pounds is a great film, well worth a watch

i dont have kids (that i’m aware of) tis a very good point, although i’ve grown up in a world of child abuse, paedophiles and rape so i’m a little bit numb to it. its love stories, father-son storylines and massive acts of kindness that are instant tear triggers for me in films.
