Recommend me a powder coater or painter.

Managed to get my hands on a 2nd hand Genesis Fortitude frame, needs a repaint or powder coat.
Who’s the current preferred painter or powder coater.

Seen some nice looking jobs by the powder shack, but make sure you give the internals a good clean out before rebuilding (a mate didn’t, upended his frame, pushed his seatpost down, and it took 2 of us 10 minutes hard effort to remove it due to the shot residue trapped in the grease).

If you are in Yorkshire then LSN powder coating is the best choice. Coating so good I’ve had people swear it was paint. And super cheap too. It’s an hours drive for me to get there but I’ll quite happily make the trip.

Triple S in Bingley were always my go to for powder coating. Not looked for a while but they used to have a postage option.

I’m tight so I agree with you – £75 for a frame and rigid fork in candy metallic is hella cheap – but budget for reaming and facing everything, and put your own sacrificial bolts and BB in. I’ve had three frames done at LSN now, and they’ve all needed a fair bit of tidying up afterwards.

Following, as I’m also interested, the paintwork on my 2017/18 Ragley BigWig is rather tired and scratched.

So, what do I need to know? Can it be done with a steel frame? How do they remove the original paint? What’s done to protect a steel frame from rusting? Replacement stickers? Put on over the powder coat?

LSN are who I recommend and I have owned a powder coating company for 30 years. We aren’t geared up to the smaller bits and bobs. To answer your questions hardtailonly, yes you can coat a steel frame. They will probably dip strip the frame and possibly a light blasting to removed any rust spots. Powder won’t go into the tubes as it’s not a dipped process so some kind of waxoyl or engine oil sloshed around inside will help protect internally afterwards. Stickers can’t be powder coated over as the temps involved are anything from 170’c to 200’c but a clear coat wet paint can be sprayed over decals. If you can get hold of old metal bb shells put them in. As above have said sacrificial bolts in any holes you don’t want clogging up or tap them out afterwards.Any more questions drop me a PM

I had my pub / beater powder coated (yes, that’s an oxymoron) at CM Coatings in Hereford.

Frame and fork stripped, bead blasted, metallic powder coat with gloss on top. £55.

Had mine done at LSN powder coating , as recommended on here and , bit disappointed really , very orange peely in places , especially top of top tube, and a few places with hardly any powder at all and can see the primer underneath !
Hours drive from me , and wouldnt use again

I had a steel Kona frame resprayed by these guys Mercian Cycles in Derby a few years ago, and was very happy with the result. Have a look at their ‘Craftsmanship –> Paint’ section for colours and details of the process. They specialise in steel frames, as they make them.

They did a good job on my old Soul.

Used Triple S before a few times as well as cheaper options. Cheaper options weren’t as good (orange peel, powder in threads etc) – Triple S were excellent but more expensive (think it was about £100 for a full sus frame but thats going back 10 years or so). They do classic motorbikes etc mostly so are well versed with masking off the stuff that should be masked off but any frame I’ve had powdercoated, regardless of who did it, required a certain amount of prep before building back up.

That said, I’ve heard good things about LSN in the car world and getting wheels powdercoated etc so if I ever needed a frame doing again I’d take a closer look at them as they’re closer to me now than Triple S.

Bristol bicycle restorations did a nice job on my Marino – paint rather than powder.

I wanted something sparkly so they laid down 3 coats of chunky metalflake the. Royal blue candy over the top. Took loads of layers of lacquer to smooth out the metalflake – I love it. Pictures don’t really do it justice.
