stratford upon avon - has loads of character, lots of little alleyways with antiquey type shops and craft shops that women love, a huge theatre, well several actually, a butterfly house, loads of very nice restaurants and hotels and is very well served by the motorways.

fancied Edinburgh, can go on the train too, so easy
been to Barcelona twice, ace but not again
some of the others sound a bit too posh for me to be honest.. 😐

I'd second Arundel, nice place, you'll get bored in about 3 hours but then you have all the stunning countryside around it to look at, or the inside of your hotel room ( cough )

Chichester is another place.

Ironbridge.

Don't be a silly Hector!
If I can go for a night out in the Toon, you can damned well go to Bath and sup ale at the Raven or the Salamander.

You could also have a grand time drinking in the Bear (Don't wear your club tie, though, I doubt that club is in the collection!) or the Bird & Baby in Oxford. And, if you find yourself in Salisbury, let me know, old chap, let me know!

Beijing. Nice to wander round if you like interesting/old/new stuff; lots of good places to eat. Not many pubs though and the beer seems to be uniformly bland.

See? Two votes for Chagford!

And Flashy is bob on with the Salamander in Bath - it's not the slightest bit posh, it just has lots of lovely, lovely ale.

..so if i take her somewhere with loads of boozers

Belfast - cheap, lots of pubs, great food and plenty to see for a couple of days. Small enough to walk round.

ton - get in amongst it at Bath, few nice shlerpers in the various quality hostelries, plenty of sights and stuff to do and then find a nice tea-room for a cream tea. You'll love it, even if you're rough as r-soles (it's not that posh) 😀

or Brizzle as DD said.

Brizzle's a nice place, it must be said! Not as nice as Bath, though!

somewhere with loads of boozers

That would be Marlborough then. Lovely little town, glorious countryside surrounding it and lots, and lots of pubs! The Lamb on the Parade is the pick, 6X tapped straight from the wood. Lovely pub.

Madrid's good for a weekend, not so good (from a tourist point of view) for much longer. Seville and Granada are also good for long weekends.

Den Hague.

I loved Amsterdam when I lived there.. Get past all the usual sights, & you'll find some awesome parks, beautiful architecture, & great places to eat and, well, just enjoy it all.

Plenty of good walking and exploring around Bath, and loads of good pubs and eateries; more eateries than you could reasonably expect to sample in a weekend. The Raven's good in the center, and if you go for a wander over to Victoria Park, look for St James's Wine Vaults just off Julian Road in St James's Street. Lovely cosy little pub, proper local with a great atmosphere and good beer. I have a good friend lives in Bath, and it's our 'local' when I go down to see her. She only lives about ten minutes away, so it is local.
Lovely walks through Sidney Gardens up to the Canal, and you can then walk back down to Widdcombe, and along the river past the Rec to Pulteney Weir. Bath's blessed by the fact it's a very small city, so quite easy to cover most of it easily in a weekend.

:
I work there and live nearby. Should point out that lovely as it is it really isn't going to be troubling places like Barcelona and Prague as a chic city break destination - Dartmoor is however a fantastic place to spend a weekend anytime of the year if you like the outdoors, big landscapes and country pubs etc..

Bath. Even got a bath on a rooftop, pretty nice, even in November. Pub just across the way called Market place? does really good pizza. We stayed on a canal boat whilst there too for something different, pretty cheap too.

Chester,
Nice walk around the walls, stop for a nice meal at a 'brunning & price' pub, some b&b's to stay in, and shops for the lady.

Big shops, independent shops, fancy hotels, boutique hotels, restaurants of all shapes and sizes. Great place all the amenities of a big city but on a pedestrian scale.
