Does anyone know why my right hand Campagnolo shifter is rattling. My road bike has seen 3 over the years, all of which have rattled which is quite annoying as the rest of the bike is silent.

The cables are tight, the bolt holding the shifter to the bars is tight and the levers are not moving from side to side so it must be something inside the shifter itself.

Any top tips would be greatly received.

I havn’t a clue. Maybe you could send it to Mercia cycles for them to look at?

Could any of the springs change thier spring-tension over time and cause some of the parts to not be held exactly in place,ie become less springy? How you’d determine this i’ve no idea, but if it’s not been rattling from day one i guess that’s possibly why.

    Its a brand new shifter.

    So no cure then?

Surely this doesn’t happen on the top end groupsets as well?

Possible cure is to put a little bit of something between the brake and shift levers. A tiny blob of something self-adhesive foam-y like. A bit like those rubbish ‘leeches’ instant patches what you used to be able to get. That’s quite often the source of the rattling..

Nope, its not the levers rattling against each other. There’s a little rubber nodule on the back of the brake lever to stop any rattling in that department.

My rattling is coming from within the lever housing itself.

The gears work flawlessly, so it’s nothing to do with a slack cable ether.

mine rattle when the brake callipers are a bit sticky and not fully returning to their depressed position. This leaves the brake cable with little tension to apply to the leavers and internal bits, thus resulting in an annoying rattle.

I don’t think that’s the problem as its only the right shifter (i’e. the front brake) that rattles. With a shorter cable to pull to the return to the “resting” position you would think that it would be the left shifter that was doing the rattling.

both my shifters can rattle. a little 3n1 oil on the calliper pivots sorts mine (93 veloce shifters with mirage callipers btw)

    I’ve fixed it.

It was the little barrel that you push across to lock the levers in the open position for wheel removal.

I have places a small section of bar tape inside the lever, in the gap that opens up at the top when you pull the brake lever. The rubber bar tape rests against the barrel and stops it rattling.

    Job done
