As I've commented on the rally posts before, I was there from age 4. Met vatanen, went to the Manx rally, Clocaenog to kielder I was dragged all over following the lombard rac. It's nothing like it was, sneaking in to night stages. Once did Trentham gardens and Wollaton park in an rs500 my uncle had just bought. It had a ridiculous alarm that sounded like a police siren, he may have used it a couple of times to jump the queue. Would love to take my lad if it still existed in that guise.

An early decision to trade my medical degree for a front row seat means I have now been pulling people out of badly parked rally cars for 30 years. Started with Sunbeams, Vauxhalls and Escorts and went right through the Group B era to the present day. Still got a soft spot for the Lancia Stratos and an evening spent in a cattle market somewhere in Wales as the works team serviced two of them either side of me.

And the trabbie, the owners brought it across to do the Manx, that was the height of their ambition. Speak it softly but it became very sick with one stage to go. Luckily the rally finished at the stop line of the final stage, no drive back to base required and as it was running last on the road the rescue unit covering the stage felt it was only proper to escort the trabbie through on the grounds of safety. This they did with for the most part no daylight visible between their front bumper and the trabbie's rear until they backed off just before the final brow and allowed it to travel to the line under it's own steam so to speak. This was done with the full knowledge and approval of every one on the safety net. The owners had no money to take it home but were adopted by a national newspaper to do the RAC, which they completed without any close escort, and then by Toyota Team Europe who took them to several rounds of the WRC before their homolgation expired.

My one of these has been scrapped now, belonged to a friend who now drives support trucks for Dakar style events and passed it on to me with a knackered gearbox.

A customer of ours has this
[img] [/img]

Which a former owner had like this...

[img] [/img]

The owner took me for "quick spin" round the block, after we did the graphics, I nearly Sh@t myself...
It didn't have the correct spark plugs so wasn't at full performance.

No rally car thread is complete unless you have Carlos throwing his helmet into the rear window of his broken Toyota, 500 mtrs from the finish line and those same 500 mtrs away from his World Championship win.

Damn right! I vividly remember one stage of the RAC Rally took place at Longleat, the cars traveling to it on public roads.
At that time the A350 trunk road from the M4 down to Poole went past the top of my road, just a few metres from my house, so all these rally cars were going past at legal speeds.
Then a Stratos went past. I could hear it when it got out onto the 60 mph road, about a quarter mile away, and for what seemed like the next ten minutes.
By which time it would have been entering Melksham, about seven or eight miles away...
A hair-raising, banshee wail!
Awesumz.

Mine - Woodpecker Stages this year, Haye Park (Mortimer Forest), Ludlow. Also used Bringewood, Hopton & Radnor. Lucky for a keen mtb'er....... Hobbies with joint benefits.

[IMG] [/IMG]

1360cc XS

Bloody expensive sport, but awesome, it is a bug. Big area here for it around here, everyone knows someone who rallies, outside of the towns, I co-drive and navigate (not the same thing) a bit too. Chris Ingram, a friend of mine narrowly missed out on the junior European title this year in a works Opel Adam.

Welsh Farmer - I'm desperate to do a road rally over Hay Bluff and down through Llanthony. Just need a navigator.

welshfarmer - Andy Burton is an almost neighbour of ours and I know his boys well, followed that car for years, it is an absolute beast, but sadly now parked up in a shed in bits, covered in chicken s**t by all accounts.

This is one of my all time favourite cars:

[img] [/img]

Campaigned to British Championship victory in 1994 by Malcolm Wilson and Bryan Thomas. My mum went to school with Bryan and I now deal with him a lot through work.

This car belongs to a friend, they rally it in the BTRDA series, Talbot Sunbeam (in red) with a 1400cc Vauxhall engine (approx. 170bhp). Proflex suspension, dog box.

[img] [/img]

They've had a tough year, lots of retirements, but shown some mega pace. This is from the recent Wyedean Stages where they managed to go 6th fastest through one stage, in a field of 300bhp+ turbo 4wd cars and big power escorts and the like:

I've been looking for the pictures that lead to this wreck too

I remember there being quite a good series of pictures in a magazine at the time but can't find anything online now. A few cars clipped the stump, Gwyndaf showed them how it was done.

I was spectating on the Manx Rally that year when the Ari clip was show at the evening highlights in the Rally HQ - there was a collective 'OHhh' from the audience !

I was also spectating just down the road the year he totaled the black escort - I saw him seconds before over the Starvey yump landing half on the grass .... he only lasted a few hundred yards further before the crash.

One of my small local town hero is Didier Auriol. First French wrc champion.

His day job was ambulance driver.

He still lives in the town and has built himself a private museum for his rally cars.
I heard him say that his favourite was the Austin Metro.

If it's "rally talk" it's got to include Escorts, that's the rule 🙂 , cheers for posting that pigface, sent it to my mate who won his class in the RAC Rally back in mid 90's with this cosworth escort below - it's just as well he owned a car bodyshop n' garage along with a deep wallet as he always drove 10/10ths at all times.

Oh and Gwydaf's stump (ooh-err), was that the one in Chatsworth?
