A clothing forum I’m on charge £10 a year to upgrade and you can only post ads when you’ve paid. If you do get ripped off the offender is named and shamed in a very big way- often I’ve seen peoples place of work and address offered to the victim from folks who know how to search for such things (I guess through facebook, twitter , etc.)
Incidentally when I got missold some tyres through PB (not dual ply as advertised) I just looked at a load of previous posts, noticed he was proud of his workplace enough to mention it and after the usual ‘tough shit mate’ type text and email replies mentioned that I’d pop down to the shop he worked the next day to discuss it in person. A full refund came quickly after.

Sellers responsibility to get the goods to the buyer successfully. End of.

    Agree. Totally.

Funnily enough the only only time I was let down on this was by STW itself. And they never answer emails (even with the title “Order xxxx, item missing”), nor reply to phone calls (“oh, that’s wotsits area, he’ll call you back”). It was only a tenner, so I gave up eventually. Ten quid isn’t bad for a life lesson.

There’s been a few things since in the STW shop I’ve fancied, but never again.

I think STW should answer that one. Are all their items branded/come from a third party?

A motorcycle form I go on – the rather excellent RGV250 – allows standard members limited functionality for posting and reading forums. To post in classifieds and other functions you need to pay £10 subscription.

Obvious difference is that STW has a publication that is the purpose of the website and forum. So if you don’t subscribe to the mag (I don’t at the mo! but probably should as I’ve bought the last dozen issues)perhaps you should need to pay a subscription fee of £10. It might even encourage more people to subscribe to the mag?!

Keep it free yet use common sense. None of the dibs dibs! I’ll pay ASAP to get that popular part asap! crap.

If you rush to get there first you tend to take risks.

I’m delighted to say that Mr Action Jackson has been in touch and we are sorting out the problem. He’s got a legitimate reason for not responding sooner as well so KARMA to him.

Now, Jamie Wright. Man up and send me an iPod or give me my money back you scumbag.

Seen as this has been bumped up to the top by the last poster here’s a quick update

I have received a full refund from Duckman.

He didn’t want our discussions to go any further in public for some reason…

…Anyway he had been refunded from Royal Mail for some time and it was only when I posted on this thread that he contacted me and a refund was given, he actually sent more money than the stem cost. I returned the extra money

He still has not given any legitimate reasons for believing I was ripping him off despite my attempts to prove that I am not a scammer (ebay feedback, forum feedback etc). This only made him ‘dig his heels in further’ as did my previous thread about pitchforks/bombers a month ago which was an attempt to get him to contact me before it got to this stage. I did not name him once in that thread, but he still knew it was about him judging by his recent emails to me.

Yes I may be an utter twunt for posting this on the forum but hey ho…

Please feel free to make your own conclusions about myself and Duckman

As a seller, it’s my responsibility until the buyer has the item in their hands.

I don’t totally agree there- I often give my buyers a choice of postage method and recommend insurance, if they want to save themselves some money and go uninsured that’s their lookout.

if they want to save themselves some money and go insured that’s their lookout

    totally disagree
If you want to chance it and send something without insurance, that’s your lookout

It’s their choice, and their saving, so their risk. Nobody can expect to choose a cheaper option and pay less, but still get the protection of the more expensive option they refused to pay for.

but still get the protection of the more expensive option

but it’s your protection, not theirs, they can’t even claim if it goes wrong

    Look at it another way
What if the buyer offered to send the money to you in a couple of different ways and you chose the cheapest for you
If the money went AWOL would you take the responsibility and still send the goods?

Easier if you just turn this situation around- if someone offered me insured and uninsured options and I chose uninsured, of course I’d accept the loss if it went missing. In the same way as if I choose second class, I don’t expect next day delivery.

I’m at a loss why you’d think you can choose an insurance-free option then get the benefits of insurance, that’s just irrational. People have to take responsibility for their decisions.

Tim is a top fellow. I’ve had many a deal with nim on here and had a few with Duckman too and always found him a straight chap to deal with

I can’t arsed selling stuff on here as such a ball ache as you post up an advert with pics and people ask for pics and don’t get me started on dibs.

If someone I’ve dealt with before posts a wanted ad and I can help I will but I’d rather pay the ebay fees that have all the associated bolloxing about you get on here

kevinw78 has takn £140 from me in bank transfer for a used set of lights. No reply to emails and actually hangs up when I ring!!!

Given him till tonight to respond and then will report to the police for theft. Not sure what if anything they will do but I would have thought they have enough iformation to follow it up.

It wont put me of the classifieds but I will want an address and to speak to someone for anything over say £30. I guess you can get a bit too lax in checking folk out. kevinw78 posted every week for months to sell the lights so he seemed OK, having now looked over his p revious posts I am not sure if he ever successfully sold anything.

There still may be a legitimate reason for failure to post lights but the hanging up does not look good.

Anyone heard of “gregg67”, I sent him money for some avids on the 22nd and no brakes ok replies to emails. . . . Not good as my son now as no brakes on his downhill bike and we will be of to switseland on the 12th 😥

I normally check people out and have never ad a problem, but failed to do it this time. Guy sounded genuine, pics and emails all good, did not check forum history, doh!

May need some others, shame as money is tight.

So anyone bought his forks on the other for sale ad?

Part of the problem can be becoming to relaxed about transactions and sending money, which I have been guilty of myself. So far I’ve had a few issues with bad descriptions or wrong items but they have been sorted out.

When I first started to buy on here I insisted on getting the name, address and telephone number of the seller and speaking to them before sending money. Ideally I would get a landline as well as mobile and call them on the landline. The area code should of course match the address. On one of the photogrpahy forums they suggest this and also asking for a photo with a piece of paper next to the item with today’s date on it, just to show it exists. I’ve not done the latter with bike parts but have when buying an expensive lens. Viewing the exif data can also be helpful and firefox has a good add-on for this.

I also check people’s histories. In this respect it is good if positive and negative feedback is given on the for sale thread. The higher the value of the item, the more careful I am.

With regards postage, if it’s a low value item I tend to send first class but get proof of posting. I hadn’t really considered the risk of the other party pretending they haven’t received the item when they have.

If you follow careful procedures the risk is pretty low but, as I said, it is easy to get complacent. I hope some of this helps.

As a serial upgrader I really value the forums, expecially now that the ebay fees have become extortionate. It did annoy me a bit when I sold some hope team green rotors at a fair price then saw them on ebay the next day at double – but then it cheered me up when he gradually had to reduce the price to more or less what I sold them for!

first class but get proof of posting.

‘Signed for’ is about the same price, and has proof of delivery, much more valuable than proof of posting.

That’s not actually a problem- there’s no need to prove nondelivery, if the other person says they never received it then you can make a claim regardless. Proof of postage isn’t any less useful than signed-for when making a claim

Thanks for clarifying that. I think the maximum compensation for first class is around £40 so anything over that goes by a different method and if affordable RMSD for expensive/fragile items as they do tend to be much more careful with those.

Yay, Paypal have found in my favour and put the money back in my account. I didn’t believe it would happen but it has! Jamie Wright is a scum bag and I hope he doesn’t darken STW again.

I lost £5 once, but thankfully all the stuff I’ve bought has come good. If I’m going to sell stuff I try to offer a good service. I used to leave feedback for stuff I’ve bought / sold but doubted anyone ever read it.
